Describe your college experience

I have found my experience with UTK fulfilling, exciting, and fun. There is always a new event going on, a club meeting to attend, or new people to chat with. When the weather is nice it feels amazing walking from class to class and figuring out where the study spot of the day will be. My classes have challenged me, but all my professors have been understanding. I have been thrilled with everything new I learn in my classes and the many opportunities I have been presented with. A coffee in the morning from one of the many yummy places on campus and another one in the afternoon for a study session gets me through the day, along with many other students.

Tip for future students

Get used to having your own schedule: College is not like high school. I know you've heard that many times, but this is one thing unlike high school that I did not think about at first. You can know so many people, be friends with a whole club, but you will still find yourself being independent. Everyone has their own schedule...different classes at different times. This is just how college works. Parking Problems: If you're going to UTK you are going to have parking problems. This is the one negative about this school. Most students living on campus do not have access to their car and commuter students still have to park far away. If you have any type of parking pass though, you can park in staff parking after 5:00pm everyday unless there is a special event. This is something I wish I knew when I first started at UTK. Another transportation tip is the T link which can pick you up from one part of campus and drop you off at another after 6:00pm and runs all night. When the T link is not running the regular bus schedule is running and it is helpful to actually look the bus schedule up online. Especially if you are planning on living in Sorority Village since it is further away from campus. Don't get behind: I feel like this one goes without saying. You do not want to get behind on work in college. Basically all professors release their syllabus for the class with all tests and assignments on it on cavas before the class so you can put everything on your calendar (I recommend Google Calendar) and start working.

Favorite class

Institute of American Civics: This class taught me about many different political philosophers including Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Aristotle, etc. It was one of my more challenging classes because there was a lot of reading and discussing. You were also required to always participate in class by asking questions and commenting. I do love a good challenge and because this class was so based on participation I found myself really focusing and taking away a lot. I learned so much from this class and it was one of those classes that really allows you to think about the world and the society we live in.

Career goals

I plan to go onto further college after I get my undergrad. I would like to do research within my studies and therefore get my doctorate degree. From there I would like to become a professor. However there are many internship opportunities within my specific colleges (The Baker School and college of arts and sciences) so I also plan to maybe do one that gets me somewhere further. I could also see myself working for a nonprofit or level of government. However, professor is at the top of my list.

Ideal way to spend a free night

TRECS- I love to go to the UTK gym when I have free time. It is usually busy, but you can get lost in your own world, in your own workout routine. The gym is nice and spacious. You can have many great workouts at it. Reading- There is a lot of reading articles assigned by professors in college so it is nice to read a book I really like on my own time with no pressure attached. Outdoor Adventure- In East Tennessee there is always a hike to do or something outdoors even if it's nighttime. Friends- I am always trying to find time to spend with my friends so if I have a free night and they happen to as well we will definitely be hanging out.

High school or secondary school

I attended Maryville High School in Maryville, Tennessee.
