Your future UCLA friend (and unofficial campus hype man who keeps it real)
Hi! I'm Schuyler, a Cognitive Science student entering my third year at UCLA - and someone who's genuinely obsessed with this place. I actually work as a UCLA campus tour guide, so I spend a lot of my time helping prospective students and families experience everything that makes this university special. Outside of tours, you'll usually find me at Wooden, grabbing food in Westwood with friends, cheering on the Bruins, or involved in one of the business organizations I'm part of. I've also interned in sports business and love talking about career opportunities, campus involvement, and how to make the most of your time here. Whether you're deciding if UCLA is the right fit, looking for hidden gems around campus, or just want an honest student perspective, I'd love to help. My goal isn't just to show you the buildings - it's to help you picture what life here actually feels like, in an honest and true fashion. By the end, I hope you'll leave feeling like you've explored campus with a friend, not just a guide.

Describe your college experience
My transition to UCLA was both exciting and challenging. Coming from a small high school, I quickly realized how much there was to explore, and getting involved on campus made all the difference. Since then, I've found an incredible community through my classes, organizations, internships, and my role as a campus tour guide. One of the things I've loved most is how every year has introduced me to new opportunities and people. Whether it's leading tours, networking with alumni, or taking classes that have expanded how I think about the world, UCLA has pushed me to grow academically, professionally, and personally.
Tip for future students
Say yes more often than you think you should. Go to the club meeting, introduce yourself after class, apply for the internship you don't think you'll get, and talk to the person sitting next to you. The opportunities at UCLA are incredible, but they rarely come looking for you - you definitely have to be willing to put yourself out there. Looking back, almost every meaningful experience I've had started with a conversation or an instance where I went outside of my comfort zone.
Favorite class
One of my favorite classes at UCLA has been Cognitive Science because it completely changed the way I think about intelligence - both human and artificial. We explored the foundations of machine learning and how many of its core ideas are rooted in concepts from psychology and philosophy, such as perception, learning, memory, and decision-making. I found it fascinating to see how questions that philosophers have debated for centuries are now influencing the development of modern AI. The class sparked a genuine interest in understanding the intersection of human cognition and technology, and it showed me how insights from multiple disciplines can come together to solve complex, real-world problems.
Career goals
I've always been drawn to organizations that bring people together, whether through sports, technology, or another industry. My goal is to build a career where I can combine strategy, leadership, and problem-solving to create experiences that positively impact others. Wherever I end up, I hope to do work that people care about and be someone who makes my team and community better.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Honestly, my ideal night depends on the week. Sometimes it's grabbing dinner in Westwood with friends, walking through campus after dark, and ending up talking way longer than we planned. Other nights it's catching a UCLA game - realistically any sport, getting a lift in at Wooden with friends, or making a good meal with my roommates and watching a show. UCLA can be a bit nonstop, so I really appreciate the nights where I can slow down and enjoy the people around me.

Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is Janss Steps. It's one of the most iconic places at UCLA, but it's also where you really get a sense of the energy of campus. On any given day you'll see students studying, meeting friends, playing music, or just relaxing between classes. As a campus tour guide, it's also one of my favorite places to stop because it gives prospective students an incredible view of Royce Hall and the heart of campus. Every time I'm there, it reminds me why I chose UCLA. I'm also a big fan of hackey sacking, so I love to go there with friends and chat while we play out in the sun.
