USF Exercise Science Junior | Student Life, Study Spots, and Tampa Tips

Grace M
Grace MNew

Hi! I’m Grace, a junior at the University of South Florida majoring in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength & Conditioning and minor in Psychology. I’m super outgoing and love meeting new people, which is probably why I’ve ended up working a lot of jobs that involve events, kids, and interacting with big groups. I know choosing a college can feel like a huge decision, so I love helping people get an honest feel for what life at USF is really like beyond the tour. I’m happy to talk about classes, campus life, fun things to do in Tampa, and anything else you’re curious about!

Clubs, organizations & involvement

While I’m not committed to just one organization, I love getting involved in different events and activities around campus. I’ve participated in a variety of different USF student events and activities like intramural sports and USF Recreation adventure trips, and I enjoy going to campus events and student programs that are open to everyone. Being involved in a variety of activities has given me a well-rounded perspective on student life and the many ways students can get involved. Outside of campus, I also work in event leadership and youth programs, where I regularly interact with large groups and build strong communication and leadership skills.

Describe your college experience

Transitioning to college was exciting but definitely a big change for me, especially since I’m not from Florida and was moving away from home. At first it took some time to adjust to being in a new place, figuring out campus, and learning how to balance classes, work, and a social life on my own. Once I settled in, though, I really started to love it. USF has given me the chance to meet so many different people, try new things, and get involved in ways I didn’t expect. My experience so far has been really fun and rewarding, and I’ve learned a lot about independence, time management, and making the most out of everything college has to offer.

Tip for future students

One thing I’d tell future students is to take advantage of as many opportunities as you can early on. Go to campus events, try different activities, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because that’s one of the easiest ways to meet people and start feeling connected to campus. I’d also say to explore beyond just classes: check out the rec center, intramurals, and different student events because there’s always something going on, and there is truly something for everyone! I’d also say not to feel like you have to be completely locked into the major you start with. A lot of people change their minds once they start taking different classes and figuring out what they actually enjoy. I started out as a chemistry major and ended up switching to exercise science, which ended up being a much better fit for me and I'm so glad I did! College is really the time to explore your interests, keep an open mind, and figure out what you want to do in the future. Since I’m also from out of state, I learned pretty quickly how important it is to build your own little community here—once you find your people and start getting involved, campus really starts to feel like home.

Favorite class

One of my favorite classes so far has been my Exercise Testing and Prescription lab. It’s specific to my major, so not everyone will take it, but I’ve really enjoyed how hands-on it is. We actually get to run different tests, use lab equipment, and apply what we’re learning instead of just hearing about it in a lecture. I’ve also liked classes with lab components like chemistry because they make things feel more interactive and practical. In general, I’ve honestly enjoyed most of my classes at USF. One thing I’ve realized is that once you get past the general education classes and start taking courses that are specific to your major, things get a lot more interesting. The classes usually get smaller, more discussion-based, and more focused on what you actually want to do in the future, which makes them feel a lot more engaging.

Career goals

In the future, I hope to work in the field of prosthetics and orthotics and eventually become a certified prosthetist/orthotist. I’m really interested in helping people regain mobility and independence through prosthetic and orthotic care, and I’m especially interested in the possibility of working with pediatric patients. My major in Exercise Science has been a great foundation for understanding how the body moves and functions, which is something that’s really important in this field. After graduating from USF, I plan to pursue a master’s program in prosthetics and orthotics so I can continue working toward that goal.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal free night is usually pretty low key but always fun. I love grabbing dinner with friends, trying new food spots around Tampa, or going somewhere that has live music or a fun atmosphere. Sometimes it’s as simple as hanging out with friends, going on a walk, or doing something spontaneous. Tampa and St Pete have so much to do, so it’s always fun finding new places or events to check out, especially when you’re with good people.
