UCLA First-Gen Commuter Student in the Humanities
Hello! My name is Lilia, and I'm a first-generation freshman in Classical Civilizations major at UCLA on a pre-nursing track. Since I'm pre-nursing, I get to see both sides of the coin -- both the sciences and the humanities at UCLA. I'm also a commuter student, so I know the best tips and tricks for staying on campus for long periods of time!

Describe your college experience
So far college has felt like a freer form of high school. My classes are grouped together in the mornings, leaving my afternoons free to go to club meetings, hang out with my friends, or study. I have more control of my schedule now, and currently spend my breaks on the grass near the Janss steps, studying or basking in the wonderful LA weather.
Tip for future students
I wish I knew how much responsibility actually falls on you as a student. I don't mean the usual 'do your homework' or 'don't cheat' responsibilities. You have complete control over your schedule, your work, and your day-to-day life. It's up to you to seek out opportunities, manage your time, and put yourself out there. It's also up to you to structure your life and choose how you want to spend your days.
Favorite class
Although I've only recently begun my time here at UCLA, my favorite class has been Dr. Ellis' Classics 10: Introduction to Greece. It's a major requirements for Classics, but the 300-person lecture is largely composed of non-Classics majors taking it as a GE/elective. He's a funny man, keeps everyone interested, and doesn't assign busy-work. His short tangents wake me up at 9AM, as well, which is an added bonus.
Career goals
I hope to pursue pediatric nursing. I'm completing my nursing school requirements, and am set to apply to MECN or ABSN programs my senior year of university in order to complete a second bachelor's, or potentially a master's degree in nursing. I am also an actress in LA, so I am actively auditioning for various projects -- a career I will pursue only if it proves to be stable long-term.
Ideal way to spend a free night
As a sort-of introvert, I'd say winding down is my way of spending a good night. I've recently mastered the art of after-lecture naps back at home, so my ideal schedule is as follows: bus back home, eat a small lunch, do a bit of homework, sleep, wake up, finish homework...and play video games. It's not as perfectly productive as many assume a UCLA student's day is, but balance is key.
