Brown University
Sophomore in Applied Mathematics @ Brown University
Hi! I'm Isaac from the Catskills in the Hudson Valley region in NY. I loved growing up in the mountains, and I hike and go to swimming holes as much as I possibly can. I spend my days skating and snowboarding, playing bass, and making electronic music, all incredibly warm communities from which I've made some of my closest friends. Additionally, I'm classically trained in ballet and modern dance, and I love choreographing pieces for myself and others..

Describe your college experience
Coming from a small, mostly homogenous high school, the transition to Brown was jarring. The entirety of my first semester was a huge adjustment period, both intellectually and socially. The scope of students here include the utter extremes, and everything in between, and it warranted serious adjustment for me dealing with the jump in academic capability, course difficulty, and feelings of social insignificance. Slowly, this transitioned to an overwhelming appreciation for these things, which now I couldn't live without.
Tip for future students
While this is extremely concentration dependent, I have a few general ones for future Brown students. 1. Know your resources. Through Brown Library services you have access to so much material, such as databases, publications, streaming services, etc. which contains enough information on anything you're interested in to fill up a lifetime. 2. Explore campus. Find spots that really speak to you, this is what really dialed in my workflow this finals season. 3. Be proactive. If you are applying for a job, research position, course override etc. , make sure to email the professor or even go to their office hours, putting a name to a face is huge in you landing the position.
Favorite class
I took a upper-level music course called 'Analog Practice' which taught the fundamentals of analog synthesis from the ground up, using the sought after ARP2500, than switched over to Eurorack as more tools were introduced. I loved the freedom of this course, as it's seminar format usually entailed discussing weekly recording exercises, as well as discussions & lessons in synthesis elements. The format allowed most of the learning to be very hands-on and individual, especially using such a rare, unique instrument.
Career goals
I hope to work in ecological data science, or more generally in the quantitative environmental sciences.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Cooking a beautiful meal than playing music with some friends.
