Sophomore Business Management Merit Scholar

Mikyla M
Mikyla MNew

Hi! I'm Mikyla and I am a second-year management major with a specialization in entrepreneurship at SDSU! As an artist who loves new adventures and organizing meaningful experiences, I am determined to break into the fashion event industry. I have gained a professional certificate in meeting and event planning. I am a commuter student but I enjoy being involved on-campus in many ways, especially joining its communities. I am currently part of 5! Outside of university, I strive to engage in fulfilling hobbies and activities, especially in story telling. For instance, I am a dancer and team captain. I am all for creating lasting relationships and connections, finding experiences that matter both on and off campus, and staying dedicated in my studies and career pursuits. As a guide, I hope to give fruitful insight that helps prospective students pursue these goals, amongst many others, and feel more confident in their application process!

Describe your college experience

Even as a commuter, adjusting to college was a very new and challenging experience. So far I have been taught many things, including useful real-world information from my classes, independence and grit, and how to grow a meaningful social life and network. I feel that I thrive at SDSU, able to take advantage of its many opportunities and resources.

Tip for future students

Start developing good self-discipline. College is a place with many support systems, but it all boils down to yourself and your work ethic. It is your responsibility to set your schedule efficiently, meet deadlines, and reach out to others. Read the fine print and know when to stand your ground. While attending university offers many opportunities, it will also present challenges. I personally experienced one during my process of becoming a merit scholar, and I had to contact many help desks because I read my contract correctly, and I knew I had to stand my ground. The conflict was resolved, but not without me knowing the details and questioning the "requirements" set on me. Have fun and take advantage of every opportunity! College is an amazing experience that goes by faster than you expect. Truly get to know yourself, build life-long connections, and enjoy being a university student.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my Fundamentals in Entrepreneurship course. It is also one of the most challenging courses I've taken. The professor gets to know each of us individually, and calls on us randomly to engage in class discussion. Though daunting, I appreciate the opportunity to get over our fears of talking in front of the class, and sharing our opinions and knowledge without worrying about giving the wrong answer. This results in fruitful class conversations where we gather insights from each other, and engage in critical thinking. In addition, the professor is very passionate about the subject, and assigns work built off of real-world experiences where we can apply the knowledge we gain in class.

Career goals

I am determined to break into the event industry, specifically for fashion. Fashion has been my longest and most consistent passion (and I have a decent few!), and I would love to build a career in it. The event industry appeals to me because of its fast-paced, dynamic nature. In a career, I want to always remain quick on my feet, have the strong skill to adapt, and experience adventure in my daily work.

Ideal way to spend a free night

As a dancer, I adore going out late in the night and Latin social dancing with my friends and other passionate dancers in the scene. I find being on the dance floor a great way to unwind and forget about my worries for a bit. Afterwards, my friends and I would escape to get some good food.
