Social and outgoing Penn student studying Philosophy Politics and Economics
Hey! I’m Franly, a sophomore in the College studying PPE. I’m originally from the Dominican Republic, but moved to NYC six years ago and later went to boarding school in New England. I’m a very social and active person and am usually out and about around campus, whether I’m hanging out with friends, going to events, or exploring everything Penn has to offer. I love meeting new people and sharing my experience at Penn, and I can give you the real student perspective on everything from academics and social life to traditions, Greek life, food, and all the little things you won’t hear about on a typical campus tour. I’m always happy to share my favorite spots, give honest advice, and help you get a feel for what life at Penn is actually like!

Describe your college experience
My transition to college has been both challenging and rewarding. Coming to Penn meant adjusting to a much larger and more independent environment, but I quickly found that Penn’s very social culture gave me many opportunities to meet people and build a strong community. Greek life has been a particularly important part of my experience, giving me close friendships while also allowing me to take on leadership responsibilities through Kappa Sigma. I have also enjoyed being involved beyond Greek life through student organizations, mentorship, and different communities on campus. Balancing a busy social life with academics and leadership has pushed me to become more organized, independent, and confident. Overall, my experience at Penn has allowed me to grow academically and personally while building relationships and becoming more involved in the community around me.
Tip for future students
My biggest advice is to actually pursue what you’re passionate about. When you genuinely care about something, people can see how much it means to you, and they’re more likely to recognize your effort, support you, and take your interests into account. Don’t be afraid to explore what excites you, even if it’s not what everyone else is doing.
Favorite class
The American South: 1865–Present, because the topics were consistently interesting, especially in exploring the South’s historical significance and its lasting impact on American society today. I also really enjoyed the professor’s lectures, which made complex historical topics engaging and encouraged me to think critically about how the region’s history continues to shape the present.
Career goals
After college, I hope to pursue a career in politics, consulting, or a field that combines both. I’m interested in using my background in economics and political science to work on meaningful policy and strategic issues.
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal free night is simply spending time with my friends. Whether we are going out, grabbing food, or just hanging out and talking.
High school or secondary school
Northfield Mount Hermon School
Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is the sitting area by the Compass. I like being able to sit outside, enjoy the weather, and watch people walking through campus. It is especially nice during the fall and spring when the weather is beautiful, and it gives me a chance to relax while still feeling connected to the energy of campus.
