University of Oregon

Rising Senior in Anthropology, Undergraduate Researcher and Pathway Recipient

Justine S
Justine SNew

Hey there! I'm an Anthropology Major at the University of Oregon, involved in just about everything you can think of. From volunteering, to clubs, to campus jobs, laboratory work, independent research, while running an Etsy shop and caring for my pets: you can trust that I can connect you with people from all walks of life. I've changed my major just about a dozen times and made all the mistakes that you won't have to. (Interested in the fine print clauses hidden in housing agreements? Want to know what classes to NEVER take? How to get in touch with the AEC or any office of your choosing? The worst and best dorms?) I work as a tour guide at the Natural Cultural History Museum on campus, so you can rest assured, this won't be my first rodeo!

Describe your college experience

I hadn't expected to like University of Oregon quite as much as I ended up when I first applied here all those years ago. Originally, I applied because I qualified for a full ride and nothing more. But, once I got here, I found a community that welcomed me with open arms. It was a rough adjustment moving away from home and learning how to be an adult, but I've come out the other end much stronger.

Tip for future students

Make sure you read all of the terms and conditions before you sign them. I know it can be boring, but seriously, I'll cut you in on a little secret: most places will happily take advantage of desperate college students. It's important to make sure you stick up for yourself when you feel like you're being scammed or hurt! That, and don't be afraid to talk to teachers, fellow students, or anyone else. If you decide to meet with me, I'll let you know in detail which dorms to avoid, which crimes are the most common and which streets to think twice about crossing alone, and which apartments to avoid like the plague.

Favorite class

Neuroscience: The Science of Happiness (The professor is so kind and brings his dog to campus!) Anthropology: Any class from Josh Snodgrass is an absolute win, I especially love his class on Evolutionary Medicine and believe that everyone should get the chance to take it.

I want to get my doctorate in Medical Anthropology and become a Researcher studying Chronic Pain.
