Proud first-gen student with enthusiasm for service, teaching, and healthcare!
Hi! I’m Esther/Blain (College ’29) from Frederick, Maryland, and I study Biology on the pre-med/pre-pharmacy track. As a first-generation Ethiopian-Tanzanian American, I’m passionate about helping young people feel supported as they pursue their academic/professional dreams! In my free time, I love cooking, watching performing arts shows, playing tennis, and visiting cafés. I highly recommend Alif Brew & Mini Mart for amazing Ethiopian coffee! As a Penn student, I've come to fall in love with Philadelphia for its city pride and the opportunity to enjoy live music, sports games, and unique restaurants all in one place. I’d absolutely love to show you around campus, share my Penn experience, and hopefully, help you fall in love with the school just like I did! Please come ready with questions -- I'm ready to answer each one!!

Describe your college experience
Transitioning into college, I was looking for 3 things: (1) Challenging, but diverse academic program/course offerings (2) A diverse and motivated student body (3) Connections to academic/professional opportunities off-campus. Just as I had hoped, I was met with all of this and so much more! I couldn't be more grateful that I chose the Red and Blue as it has already opened so many doors
Tip for future students
Talk to everyone -- there is always something to learn from those around you! At the same time, comparison is the thief of joy, so don't get too caught up in what other people are doing,
Favorite class
My first-year seminar, Fundamentals of Storytelling! The smaller, seminar-style class allowed me to connect with my classmates and improve my writing/communication skills. I highly recommend that freshmen register for a first-year seminar as they are a great way to know people in your class and fulfill graduation requirements too too :)
Career goals
Become a clinical pharmacist or doctor!
Ideal way to spend a free night
Going out for dinner with my friends, strolling around campus, and maybe grabbing an ice cream along the way :)
High school or secondary school
Tuscarora High School
Favorite spot on campus
Penn Park is my favorite spot on campus because it's where our tennis courts are!
Meeting point
Outside the entrance to Class of 1920 Commons on the University of Pennsylvania campus
