Outgoing Economics/Business student with a love for art, nature, and community.

Hello! My name is Brenda. I am a current junior here at the University of Maryland, studying Economics with a minor in General Business. I was born and raised here in PG County, MD, and my parents were born and raised in El Salvador. Having lived in this area my whole life, I have grown very familiar with UMD’s campus and community, and being a student has only helped blossom my love for the school. I have loved all forms of art since I can remember. Drawing, painting, pottery, sewing you name it! I also have a deep care for nature and advocacy for underrepresented groups. Caring for living things is part of my character, and I will always do my best to make those around me feel comfortable and confident. I would love to walk around campus and show you all the most important buildings and all the nicest quiet spots! As someone who has lived in the dorms and has switched to commuting by bus, I know how important it is to know this campus well for when you need a study spot, need a spot to find new friends, or want a quick bite to eat before class. I look forward to meeting you!

Describe your college experience

College life has been completely different than what I've ever experienced before. I have grown so much as a person and as a student since my first year here. My knowledge has grown, my independence has grown, my confidence has grown, and I know my next few semesters at this school will only show me more opportunities to become the person I have always dreamed of. The professors are incredibly nice and work hard to challenge your mind. The campus is beautiful with lots of nice spots to study and hangout. The community is so welcoming, from the arts to the sports. I have loved being a UMD student and I urge anyone with the choice to come to this Univeristy aswell!

Tip for future students

My biggest top for future students is to put yourself out there! College is for education, but it's also the place to find your friends for life. The community on campus is amazing, and I regret not integrating myself into it sooner. Not only is socializing good for your mental health, but it can be great for information on internships, scholarships, and other career opportunities.

Favorite class

Principles of Accounting I This was one of my first classes at the business school and showed me why the school is so competative. This class challenged me so much, forcing me to think about finances in ways I never had before. When my brain feels challenged, I can feel my intelligence growing.

Career goals

Once I graduate college, I plan to either expand my education with a masters degree or get straight into working in business. I love to work with people and numbers, so I am looking for positions in HR, management, and leadership.

Ideal way to spend a free night

On a free night, my favorite thing to do would be to go out with some friends. Whether that be going to eat, going shopping, or doing something fun like bowling. On another note, I like to make sure my academics and responsibilities are taken care of first.

High school or secondary school

Fairmont Heights High School

Favorite spot on campus

McKeldin Mall. This spot makes it pretty easy to get to the buildings I need to go, like the library, the business school, the economics building, the education building, etc. The fountain is also so calming to sit by. I love to lay next to the fountain and listen to the water while watching the clouds between classes.

Meeting point

Frederick Douglass Square on the University of Maryland campus
