Hi! I’m Cindy, a neuroscience and biological science double major student at the University of Pittsburgh and a certified EMT. I remember how overwhelming choosing a college felt, so I’d love to help make your visit as informative and comfortable as possible. Describe your college experience

Transitioning to Pitt was exciting but definitely an adjustment. Coming from out of state, I had to get used to living in a new city and balancing challenging coursework with extracurriculars. Since then, I’ve gotten involved in research, volunteering, and working as an EMT, which has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I’ve really enjoyed the collaborative environment at Pitt and the opportunities to gain hands-on experience outside the classroom.

Tip for future students

Don’t feel like you need to have everything figured out before you get here. Get involved early, attend club fairs, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Make use of professors’ office hours, build good study habits from the beginning, and take advantage of the city—there are so many great restaurants, museums, parks, and hospitals within walking distance. Pitt has countless opportunities, but you have to be willing to put yourself out there.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Morality and Medicine because it challenged me to think beyond science and consider the ethical side of healthcare. We spent a lot of time discussing real-world medical dilemmas and debating different perspectives, which made every class engaging. It helped me develop critical thinking and communication skills while showing me that there often isn’t a single “right” answer in medicine.

Career goals

After graduating from Pitt, I plan to attend medical school and pursue a career as a physician. I’m particularly interested in neuroscience and hope to combine patient care with research throughout my career.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I usually like grabbing dinner with friends, trying a new coffee shop, or walking around Schenley Park if the weather is nice. Sometimes I’ll stay in with my cats, watch a movie, or catch up on studying at Hillman Library. Pittsburgh has a great balance between city life and places to relax.
