Hi! My name is Cindy Dai. I’m a first-generation immigrant who grew up in California, and I’m currently a senior at Bowdoin College studying Mathematics and Biology. I’m happy to talk about anything from academics, research, student life, adjusting to Bowdoin, to what it’s like to build your own path at a liberal arts college.

Clubs, organizations & involvement

On campus, I work for the Theater Department making costumes, building sets, and helping rig lights. I’ve also worked as a teaching assistant, learning assistant, and lab assistant for various Biology and Chemistry courses and professors. Outside of class, I’ve been involved in biology research focused on marine ecology, invasive species, and computational approaches to ecological questions. These experiences have let me explore both the arts and sciences at Bowdoin, which has been one of my favorite parts of my college experience.

Describe your college experience

I initially had a very challenging time finding my people and adjusting to the academic pace of Bowdoin. The biggest challenge of them all though, was surviving the winters here. It is brutal. But! I would that that these challenges have really forced me to learn how to actively adapt and think through how I want to live my life. I have had a wonderful experience at Bowdoin. It wasn't always easy, but it's been a fulfilling time. Since I've gotten to Bowdoin, I've always been very engaged in life.

Tip for future students

Don't be afraid to ask for help. I've received so much support from my friends, professors, staff, class dean, and even just random townspeople. The people here are so kind and generous. If you ever find yourself to be at a low point, don't hesitate to reach out.

Favorite class

My all time favorite class at Bowdoin has been Contemporary Chinese Art. It was a 3000 level art history seminar with only 6 students in the class. Our professor was beyond knowledgable in the subject. She had a very fluid course design where she would try to adapt the course content based off ideas and concepts that came up during previous class discussions. All my classmates were so eager to learn and discuss too. Each class session was around 90 minutes but every class always flew by. There was never a dull moment. That class fulfilled my high school fantasy of liberal arts college classes.

Career goals

I hope to go to graduate school for computational biology. I'm currently navigating the application process!

Ideal way to spend a free night

If low tide lines up with sunset, definitely tidepooling at my favorite spot. I like to bring a easy handheld dinner with me so I can eat while watching the sunset. If not, I like to harass my friends while they're doing work.
