Material Scientist grad student ready to show you every hidden gem
Hi everyone! I’m Sergio, a materials science grad student here at UC San Diego. If you’re looking for me, I’m usually in the lab mixing things up (in a very scientific way, of course) or hiding in the library with a stack of books and a big cup of coffee. I moved all the way from Tijuana to chase a pretty big dream: working in the industry, and maybe one day at NASA! UC San Diego is helping me get ready for that adventure, and I’m excited to share this campus with you. I love showing people around, pointing out cool spots, and sharing tips about labs, libraries, and the best places to study (or snack). So get ready for a fun tour, some science stories, and maybe a few jokes along the way. Let’s explore!

Describe your college experience
It was amazing, during my undergrad in Tijuana it was incredible meeting new people and knowing that many students were interested in the same degree as me. As a Grad student at UCSD it has been incredible, the culture, the multiple languages and the community of students that helps everyone. I have never imagined I would have an opportunity to be in this amazing school,
Tip for future students
Read a lot, always have a study group and always be kind
Favorite class
Nanochemistry, is was an exceptional course for nanoengineering because it provided the fundamental understanding needed to design and control materials at the nanoscale, where properties can differ significantly from those of bulk materials. It helps students connect chemistry, materials science, and engineering by showing how synthesis conditions, surface chemistry, and reaction mechanisms influence the structure and performance of nanomaterials.
Career goals
Work in industry as a material scientist
Ideal way to spend a free night
At home with my wife and daughter watching a movie
High school or secondary school
Instituto Mexico
Previous college
UC San Diego (grad school) / Instituto Tecnologico de Tijuana (undergrad)
Favorite spot on campus
At UCSD it has to be the library where I can study and meet new people
Meeting point
Triton Fountain on the University of California San Diego campus
