Marine Biology Grad | Charleston Fellow | Aquarium Diver | Honors Student
Hi! I’m Calvin, a recent graduate from the College of Charleston with a degree in Marine Biology and distinction as a Charleston Fellow and Honors student. I’ve conducted research on microplastic pollution in local fish species, worked hands-on with marine life as a volunteer diver at the South Carolina Aquarium, and performed in mainstage theatre productions. I’m passionate about marine science, conservation, and engaging with others—happy to help however I can!

Describe your college experience
Transitioning to college was both exciting and challenging, but I quickly found my place through the Honors College and Charleston Fellows Program. I dove into hands-on learning early on—whether it was researching sharks in Turks and Caicos, analyzing microplastics in local fish, or performing on stage in a mainstage play. I balanced science and the arts throughout my time at the College of Charleston, and my experience was shaped by a strong community of peers, mentors, and unforgettable opportunities both in and out of the classroom.
Tip for future students
Don’t be afraid to say yes to unexpected opportunities—some of my favorite college experiences came from stepping outside my comfort zone. Whether it’s joining a research project, studying abroad, or auditioning for a show, take the leap. Also, build relationships with your professors early—they’re some of your best resources and biggest supporters.
Favorite class
One of my favorite classes was on the history of witch hunts in Europe. It was a fascinating blend of history, religion, law, and social psychology. We analyzed real trial records, debated different theories, and explored how fear and power shaped society. It pushed me to think critically and challenged a lot of my assumptions about the past—and the present.
Career goals
After college, I hope to continue working in marine science—ideally combining research, conservation, and public engagement. I’m especially interested in fieldwork, SCUBA diving, and education through aquariums or nonprofit organizations. Eventually, I plan to pursue graduate school, but for now, I’m excited to gain more hands-on experience and continue learning outside the classroom.
Ideal way to spend a free night
On a free night, I love spending time with friends—whether that’s grabbing drinks at Burns Alley, catching a local show, or just relaxing with good conversation. I’m always up for anything that mixes fun, community, and a little bit of Charleston charm.
