Hello! My name is Julia, and I am an rising senior in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA). Originally from New York, I’ve come to consider DC and the Georgetown community my second home. My time here has allowed me to perfectly bridge my passions for science and policy. Through Georgetown, I've had the incredible opportunity to travel to China, Japan, and Spain, and participate in an unforgettable research expedition to the Peruvian Amazon. Locally, I’ve been able to dive into policy firsthand through two DC internships, including one on Capitol Hill. When I’m not in class or interning, you can find me running, hiking, reading, writing, or catching up with friends. I am so grateful for the professors, opportunities, and lifelong connections I've made here—Hoya Saxa!

Describe your college experience

My time at Georgetown has been a brilliant whirlwind. It is definitely a rigorous environment, but that's exactly why I love it. I have grown so much personally and professionally here, Georgetown truly does push students to be 'people for others.' I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from world-class professors and access unique professional opportunities that only exist here in the District. Most importantly, I’ve met an incredible community of friends and peers who inspire me daily. It’s been an challenging, amazing, and deeply rewarding experience.

Tip for future students

Pop the 'Georgetown bubble!' - get off campus as much as you can, especially after your first year. The GUTS bus is free and very easy to access, and there's so much to do both in Georgetown and downtown DC.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Free Speech and Foreign Policy with Dr. Sanford Ungar. This class was a SFS (School of Foreign Service) proseminar, designed for freshman students. It expanded my worldview, taught me to be confident in my opinions and writing, and gave me the opportunity to bond with classmates from all different majors in the SFS. The professor was the former director of Voice of America (as well as a very well-respected American journalist), and I even got a job opportunity from the class! It definitely shaped my time at Georgetown.

Career goals

I hope to pursue a career at the intersection of science and policy! My immediate plan after graduation is to spend a year doing a fellowship to gain some hands-on experience, and then head to law school. Georgetown has really shown me how important it is to connect scientific research with real-world advocacy, and I want to use a legal background to help bridge that gap

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is cooking dinner with my housemates, followed by a walk around campus. Georgetown is so beautiful at night, and we almost always run into friends along the way. We love exploring campus or just finding a spot in an academic building to study and hang out together. If we want to head off campus, the heart of DC is just a quick free bus ride away, making it easy to grab dessert or explore the city!

Favorite spot on campus

Lauinger Library! It's the heart of Georgetown for a reason, mostly because everyone always hangs out there. "Lau" is five floors of academic and social life, where every level has its own energy and volume. It even features a fantastic student-run cafe on the second floor, perfect for that extra energy boost. My friends and I love the atmosphere so much we hang out here even when we aren't studying!
