Stanford University
International PhD Student
Hey! I’m Yee Lin, a PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering. I come with a mix of experiences from studying in Asia and the UK before joining the Stanford fam. I’d love to share how to navigate different education systems (and cultures!) and show you just how welcoming and vibrant Stanford really is.

Describe your college experience
My college experience has been a global journey—I started my studies in Asia, continued in the UK, and now I’m pursuing my PhD at Stanford. Each transition brought its own challenges, but also incredible growth. Moving to the U.S. for grad school was a big shift—academically, culturally, and socially—but Stanford’s supportive community made it easier to find my footing. It’s been exciting to explore new perspectives, work with amazing people, and feel at home so far from home.
Tip for future students
One tip I’d give future students is: don’t be afraid to ask for help—people here want to support you. Whether it’s professors, peers, or staff, everyone’s rooting for your success. I also wish I’d known that it’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed at first—especially coming from a different system or country. Give yourself time to adjust, say yes to new experiences, and don’t stress about having it all figured out right away. You’ll find your rhythm!
