I’m an outgoing business major who loves exploring everything to do in Provo!

I’m Abby, a strategy major in the business school. I have a minor in European studies and I’m part of the Honors program. I also was part of the BYU color guard, and have attended every home football game (so far). I love doing things around Provo, like canoeing, hiking, salsa dancing, and pickleball. Initially, I didn’t want to even apply to BYU — but through a campus tour my mom dragged me to, I fell in love with this beautiful campus. Now, I’ve found a home here and I can’t imagine my life without BYU.

Describe your college experience

My freshman year transition was difficult. I knew nobody attending BYU, and I had no family nearby. I initially struggled to make friends and figure out the path I wanted to take, and I felt very alone. Thankfully, I was living at the dorms, and many other freshman felt the same. When I finally learned to look outside of myself and focus on being kind to others, I made many friends quickly. These friends inspired me to become a better person and helped me find my major and home at BYU. I became inspired to serve a mission, and I got into my dream major (strategy), while still having many opportunities to explore things outside of the business world, and to travel. BYU has given me life-long friends and helped me become a better person.

Tip for future students

I wish I knew how amazing the weekly devotionals are, and went to them more as a freshman. I also wish I was less concerned with how people viewed me and my fears, and focused more on being friendly and making other people happy.

Favorite class

I took an Honors class about birdwatching for a GE credit. I loved it — I found myself becoming close friends with my classmates since our class was engaging and I found a new hobby in birdwatching. It was enjoyable and unexpected! I still birdwatch to this day, and I love that college gave me an opportunity to explore unique things beyond my major that I wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.

Career goals

I want to go into management consulting at a large firm, such as Deloitte.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I love to host people at my apartment for game and movie nights! If I’m not doing that, I’m either at the Tanner building for networking or club nights, or out with friends doing things like silent discos, sushi runs, or hiking.

Flower Mound

Favorite spot on campus

I love the LaVell Edwards Stadium. I performed in the BYU color guard for 3 years, meaning every game I got front-row seats to cheer for the football team, the chance to perform for a full stadium, and trips to other states for football games. I didn’t know anything about football starting out, but the energy of the crowd and watching the game made me feel more connected to the school.
