I am an undergraduate student studying psychology and hope to become a therapist

My name is Jangel Santos and when I first came to northeastern I had a music major. I believed that music was something I wanted to pursue, but after taking diverse courses I learned psychology was more of my passion. I love to get to know new people and their interests. I participated in a couple clubs through my years being here and what I love to do is make a welcoming environment!

Describe your college experience

At first it was difficult for me to transition into a dorm because I’ve never lived alone and have always lived with my parents. While I did find it difficult to accommodate myself into the college environment, I got to meet people who helped me fit in and be comfortable with myself. By the end of my first year I was able to gain confidence living alone and gaining my independence for not just living on campus but for real world scenarios.

Tip for future students

I definitely recommend joining clubs that align with your ideas, with your identity, or just clubs that align with what you love. You’d be surprised on how many people you could become friends with or people who are just like you. This is something I wish I knew before starting college as being in clubs helps me get out of my comfort zone.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Clinical Psychology & Mental Health. In the future I want to pursue the career of being a therapist and this class has helped me learn more about the background of that career and knowledge that are definitely helpful for if you are pursuing this career. For example, I learned about a variety of disorders that I had no knowledge of before like avoidant personality disorder.

Career goals

I either hope to continue my pursuit of becoming a therapist/having my own private practice. Or go into the world of business and perhaps find interest/a career in real estate as that is something that has recently come up in my time at Northeastern and looking more into that.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is catching up with friends or spend a night with myself. This could be binging a show, reading a book, or maybe taking a walk outside.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is the Centennial Common. There’s a variety of things you can do like relaxing on the grass, activities that you can do with friends, and studying while being outside. In my opinion this is one of the best places you can relax on campus. If you’re hungry/thirsty, you can even grab a drink or snack from the Dunkin in Shillman hall or from the food court in Ryder Hall.
