I am a Family Life: Human Development emphasis BS major
Hi! I’m Leah, and I’m a Human Development major in my junior year of undergrad. I’m planning to get a master’s degree in social work so I can work with at-risk children and potentially pursue therapy. I grew up in South Jordan, Utah, which is just a short distance from Provo. I love all things outdoors, especially skiing, hiking, and camping, but I also enjoy calmer activities like reading and watercolor painting. I love being a student at Brigham Young University. It is a beautiful campus with amazing people and so many opportunities and activities. The spiritual aspect of the university, along with the high-quality education, makes BYU unlike any other school. I would love to show you around campus and share what makes BYU so unique!

Describe your college experience
My transition to college felt hard. I'm the oldest in my family so I was the first one to leave. I found it hard to be on my own and I also had a hard time finding a community my first year of college. It's a really big campus and sometimes it can be overwhelming how many people are here. But I have loved all the other years I have spent at BYU. I found good people, found ways to get involved and I have built a life I really love in Provo. So, I would say overall it has been a really great experience and I have learned a lot.
Tip for future students
I would say that it is totally ok to not know what you're doing and to make mistakes. Your about to go through a big life change and you're trying to figure out who you are and what you want your life to look like. Just take it one day at a time. Get involved, meet people even when it's hard or doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. Make decisions, you're allowed to change your mind, just get started. And life is what you make of it; you can build an experience you will love, and you don't need to be alone while you try to do that.
Favorite class
My Human Development class. It was the reason I decided to study human development. It was just amazing to learn about how humans work, how our relationships affect us, and biologically how we work. I think that it's important to understand how we work and I found it very informative and I just loved everything I learned.
Career goals
I hope to get a master's in social work, and then to work at risk kids. I've thought about doing clinical therapy or adoption type social work.
Ideal way to spend a free night
With friends just talking or doing some random adventure. Anything outdoors, or trying a new thing and meeting new people is what I love to do.
High school or secondary school
Bingham High School
Favorite spot on campus
I love the JFSB because I spend a lot of time there for classes and it has a great outdoor spot. I spend a lot of time in the Harold B. Lee Library because it has some good spots to study in. It also has great lighting and places to look outside. I'm the type of person who likes to be outside so places where I can do that, I really love.
