Howdy! I am a project savvy Mechanical Engineering student at UCSD!

Britney R

I’m a senior studying Mechanical Engineering here at UC San Diego. During my time here, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work on rockets through our Rocket Propulsion Laboratory, where I also held a leadership role. I’m part of SHPE, which has been a big part of my community on campus, and outside of class I’ve gotten into rock climbing at the rec center and even discovered a love for backpacking on a UCSD-organized trip. UC San Diego has given me chances to grow in so many different ways, and I’m excited to share a glimpse of that experience with you.

Describe your college experience

My college experience at UC San Diego has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. As a Mechanical Engineering student, I’ve been pushed academically, but I’ve also had the chance to take what I’ve learned in class and apply it through hands-on projects, like building rockets in the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory, where I also stepped into leadership. Beyond academics, being part of SHPE connected me to a supportive community, and through UCSD’s recreation programs I’ve discovered new passions like rock climbing and backpacking. Looking back, UCSD has really shaped me not just as an engineer, but also as someone who loves to learn, lead, and try new things.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip for future students is to step outside your comfort zone and take advantage of the opportunities UCSD offers beyond the classroom. Whether it’s joining a club, trying a new sport at the rec center, or signing up for a trip you’ve never considered before, those experiences will help you grow just as much as your classes. Some of my favorite memories here came from saying ‘yes’ to things I didn’t expect to love

Favorite class

My favorite class at UCSD was MAE 3, which is the Introduction to Engineering Graphics and Design course. It was one of the first times I got to do real hands-on engineering, from learning design tools to actually building projects with a team. That class showed me how exciting engineering could be beyond equations and theory, and it really confirmed that I was in the right field.

Career goals

My career goal is to become a structures and mechanisms engineer in the rocket industry. I’ve always been fascinated by how complex systems come together to make spaceflight possible, and through my experiences here at UCSD—especially working on rockets with the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory—I’ve been able to build the skills and passion to pursue that path.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is either going climbing at the rec center with friends or just hanging out and relaxing after a busy week. I also love planning for my next backpacking trip, since exploring the outdoors has become one of my favorite hobbies since coming to UCSD. Get me away from a computer and blue light !!!
