Honest and Campus-Knowledgeable Master's Student in International Relations
Hello! My name is Jwi and I was at UMD for my undergrad for International Relations and Sociology, Minoring in Korean Studies and now an accelerated Masters student in International Relations. I've lived in multiple countries so I know how a new place can feel. I had to search for a lot of information on my own: from clubs to best classes to take I was always searching for opportunities. I'm always searching and listening for information that might be handy for later. If you tour with me, not only will I show you the campus, but I will be honest about my time here. All the things that a formal orientation might not warn or tell you about. I will give that student's perspective that I wished I had. Please ask me questions! Every question has an answer and I am happy to find a way to get anything to you. UMD is a humongous place, but it's not scary at all. I've been apart of 5+ clubs and organizations and know all the getting involved things you'll need to know! I also have plenty of recommendations on what to do, how to do it, and study tips that a soon-to-be college student might find helpful. As a guide, I'm here to help! If you have anything specific or want to know more, I'm happy to chat!

Describe your college experience
I had an easy time transitioning but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have my bumps here and there. Mostly I had great, supportive peers and faculty around me who helped me move to where I wanted to be.
Tip for future students
Do not be afraid to ask questions and to speak up. People are scary yes, but everyone has been where you are. No one’s perfect! People will be there to answer your questions for sure and give you the advice you want or need.
Favorite class
Surprisingly a History class on Japan and Korea’s view from eachother. Even tho I was an international relations and sociology double major, I was also a Korean studies minor. It was a class that was not only super interesting but the discussion and what was taught came from a neutral view with the facts of historical documents.
Career goals
I want to be an Analyst! Something regional with Asia.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Definitely a night at home, baking, and painting BUT I do love hanging out with friends and having a meal.
High school or secondary school
Humphreys High School and Singapore American School
Favorite spot on campus
The chapel garden! I’m not a religious person but that place is quiet and beautiful. Somewhere I can get away from all the bustle of students.
Meeting point
Frederick Douglass Square on the University of Maryland campus
