Hi! I'm Alyza! A little ambitious, very curious, and always up for adventure!
Hi y'all, I'm Alyza! I'm currently a sophomore at Rutgers, and although I'm still undecided on my major, I'm hoping to transfer into the Nursing program! A little about me: I moved to the United States from the Philippines a few years ago, knowing absolutely no one here. It was definitely a big adjustment, but somewhere along the way, a place that once felt so unfamiliar slowly became my second home. When I'm not busy with school, you'll probably find me reading a good book, checking out a cute café, or finding something new to do. And if you happen to see me roaming around campus, there's a pretty good chance I'll have a coffee in my hand because, well, coffee is life! If there's one thing moving across the world has taught me, it's that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to some pretty amazing experiences. I'm still discovering new things myself, and I'm excited to share what I've come to love about Rutgers with you!

Clubs, organizations & involvement
As a transfer student, I am still discovering many opportunities that Rutgers has to offer. Currently, I am not involved in any clubs or organizations on campus. However, in the future, I plan to become more involved on campus to meet new people, build my campus community, and connect with people who share interests related to my major and future goals. As well as making new memories. I’m looking forward to getting more involved on campus and stepping out of my comfort zone!

Describe your college experience
Transferring to Rutgers University from a small college was a big change for me. I've been adjusting to the bigger city and the bigger college campus. The transition has been exciting and a little overwhelming. College, I've learned, is about teaching you how to adapt and grow. Navigating unfamiliar places on campus to find new classes can feel overwhelming. Still, I like to think of this as growing opportunities and new chances to meet new people. I love that I can take classes that I'm interested in or that stretch my boundaries. Every day, there were endless possibilities and new opportunities to meet new people and try new things. I can still get lost sometimes, and figuring out campus can feel like a scavenger hunt, but there is so much to explore. There are countless places to eat and study. The first couple of years of college can feel like playing a game, but I've learned you can gain a lot of knowledge just by having fun and meeting new people. Most importantly, college is where you learn who you are and what you want to do with your life. Finding out your passions can be a game in itself! My experience at Rutgers has made me want to help people who are just starting their lives here. I want to be that first welcoming face who helps people discover a place filled with opportunities.
Tip for future students
If there's one piece of advice I'd give future students, it's to embrace the unfamiliar and not be afraid to put yourself out there! College can feel like a whole new world, especially when you're trying to figure out where your classes are, meet new people, and somehow manage to get eight hours of sleep (still working on that one!). As a transfer student, I've learned that you don't have to have everything figured out on your first day, or even your first semester. Ask questions, introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you, explore campus, and take advantage of opportunities that come your way. Most importantly, don't get so caught up in chasing grades and deadlines that you forget to enjoy the little moments. College isn't just about finding your future career; it's also about discovering yourself, making memories, and growing into the person you're meant to become. And remember, everyone is figuring things out in their own way, so give yourself a little grace along the way!
Favorite class
My favorite class has been Geology, but I have to say it's tied with my French course at my last college. It's how Geology has given me a new way of looking at the things around me. I have always found learning about the Earth and its properties to be cool. French, on the other hand, was incredibly fun and engaging as it broadened my cultural horizons with a completely new language and country. The best part of each class was the reminder that learning can be fun and exciting. It truly encourages us to be inquisitive, ask questions, and find the unknown.
Career goals
After college, I hope to continue my education and pursue a career in healthcare, whether that means advancing my studies in nursing or eventually attending medical school! I've always been fascinated by the human body and the science behind medicine, but what draws me to healthcare the most is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone's life. I'm particularly interested in cardiology, and I would love to explore that specialty further as I continue my education. Although I'm still figuring out exactly where my journey will take me, I know one thing for certain: I want a career that challenges me to keep learning, growing, and helping others. My dreams might be a little ambitious, but I believe that's what makes them exciting
Ideal way to spend a free night
A perfect free night for me includes a little bit of everything! Every once in a while, I’ll get the spontaneous travel bug and want to explore a new area and try new spots with friends. Whether it’s seeking out new restaurants or cafés, or just getting together to talk and catch up, I’m down to make some memories, no matter how big or small the adventure. I also love being social, but I can enjoy some alone time, too. You can usually find me cuddled up with a good book or a favorite movie, having a chill and relaxed night, or just having a peaceful drink. Being an ambivert means getting to enjoy being social and having some me time! I’m totally ok with having to recharge at times so I can be prepared and energized for the next outing!

Favorite spot on campus
i love this question. Being a transfer student, I'm still getting used to finding all the hidden areas of Rutgers. The majority of my classes are on College Avenue, so I don't have the opportunity to explore the other campuses. For now, the favorite areas of Rutgers are The Yard and the benches by Scott Hall. The Yard can be chaotic, especially when buses arrive with students, but I like sitting on a chair and eating while doing my homework. For an urban area, being surrounded by trees is extremely relaxing and calming. I find myself working on college essays out in the open while enjoying the scenery. I take breaks from reading in the nice outdoors, and enjoying some peace and quiet instead of the loud dorm rooms. Finding nature on a bustling campus is quite impressive, and shows how Rutgers really has something for everyone! Being able to relax outside is motivating to study and do homework and give your eyes a rest from a desk, especially on a busy college campus. I, for one, am very happy to have recently discovered Rutgers and finding a lot of favorites already! I can't wait to find even more!
