I returned to school later in life to advance my career, and I’m now an undergraduate focused on biology, particularly animal science. I chose the University of Delaware to continue my education - its beautiful campus, strong programs, and active student life made it an ideal fit. I’m enjoying the academic opportunities as well as the many clubs and social events that enrich campus life.

Describe your college experience

I am a returning student who originally attended and still work at the Community College of Philadelphia. Later in life I decided to pursue a four‑year degree, and the University of Delaware—its strong programs, beautiful campus, and many opportunities—was the right choice. The transfer process was straightforward: department heads met with me to evaluate credits, approved additional courses for transfer, and coordinated with CCP to update the transfer list. Their support made the transition simple and efficient.

Tip for future students

Having attended a small college, transitioning to the University of Delaware’s large campus was an eye‑opener. I recommend carrying a map and, if possible, scouting your classrooms ahead of time. Check bus routes in case you need to travel to satellite campuses. Exploring the nearby off‑campus area helps you settle in by learning where stores and food options are, and visiting the campus gym is worthwhile - it offers many activities such as swimming and rock climbing.

Favorite class

One of my favorite classes wasn’t related to my major: French literature of the horror genre. We studied French culture, explored what defines a French horror story, and examined how those authors crafted atmosphere and dread. It was a unique, engaging way to fulfill a general education requirement.

Career goals

After graduation I hope to pursue medical research with animals, focusing on hormonal studies in sea slugs. Current work on sea slug insulin and related peptides shows promising potential for diabetes research, and I’d like to contribute to that area to help advance treatments for the diabetic community.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I enjoy reading, playing video games, and watching TV. As an older student, I’m not into partying - I stay busy with classes, work, and clubs. Many new students at the University of Delaware get swept up in social events and sometimes neglect their studies; my advice is to prioritize self‑care, set a manageable schedule, and make time for the gym or other healthy activities.
