Friendly chemistry major who knows people in all parts of the school

Hi! I’m Lila, a sophomore studying Chemistry and Biochemistry here at UChicago. I had a rocky start to my first year, but settled in and was able to meet so many amazing people and develop a deep love for this school. While I spend a bit too much time in our school’s libraries, I still spend ample time at all of the fun and sometimes hidden spots around campus, often going with friends to one of the many coffee shops or the on-campus thrift store. I’m also familiar with many of our school’s departments and clubs through my friends, beyond just the ones that I am personally involved with. I would love to answer any questions about our school, starting college, or living in and navigating the great city of Chicago!

Describe your college experience

Being long-distance from my family for the first time was very difficult, and I had some unforeseen circumstances in the fall that made my first quarter very difficult. Making friends was also a bit of a struggle, but after my first quarter I had met many people I loved hanging out with, and had felt very much adjusted to the school. While my classwork had also increased in college, the school provided many resources to make that transition very manageable.

Tip for future students

Everyone will be going through the same difficult transition, but there are so many resources and communities to help with the social and academic difficulties of starting college. You just have to put yourself out there.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my first quarter of Honors General Chemistry. We got an introduction to quantum mechanics, a concept that I found absolutely fascinating. We then tied that framework to previous material we were familiar with, such as chemical bonding.

Career goals

I hope to continue studying chemistry in graduate school, with the long-term goal of staying in academia and hopefully becoming a professor.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I love to spend free nights with friends, whether it is going out a party, a board game night, or watching a movie together.

Favorite spot on campus

I love the Plein Air cafe. It has great coffees and breakfast foods, and is always incredibly lively. It also has a nice outdoor seating area that is especially beautiful during the summer.
