Excited Machine Learning Major who knows the secrets to college living

Hey there! I'm James Williams, I am studying Machine Learning Engineering here at BYU. I come from a big family of 10 and all previous siblings came to BYU before me. I was nervous to leave my family but soon after arriving here at BYU it became clear to me how much I was going to love this place. During the day I get my work done and at night its my time to go explore the campus and what it has to offer. You'll find me amongst my friends going to random events that offered free food, playing spike ball, and screaming at the BYU football games. I've come to love the campus and what it has to offer to so many different people. Id love to show and tell you about all the great spots available to you as a student at BYU. Come ready to explore and find your favorite spot on campus!

Describe your college experience

So far my transition to college has been very natural and easy for me. I served a mission and shortly after I returned I came out to college. Meeting my roommates, beginning my classes, and attending college events and activities have all been great. I feel so much more independent and free since I have attended college. I also feel I have become more open to trying new things around me.

Tip for future students

I think a great tip for students is to set apart time to study and actually study during that time. If your able to do this distraction free you will be suprised how much work you can get done. This leaves more time to be with friends, family, and do other essential activities on and around campus.

Favorite class

CS111 has been my absolute favorite class thus far because the concepts we learn are so exciting to put into action in real life. It is the greatest feeling to run a program and have it work the way its intended, the thrill of creation is amazing! It gives me such a small taste of what it will be like to have a career in this field and I love it!

Career goals

I hope to become a Machine Learning Engineer. I want to make a difference in the field of AI and Machine Learning. Help make it morally correct and ethically in line with good principles. I want to work as a part of a team that accomplishes something large and influential. I also mainly hope to be able to provide for my family through my future career.

Ideal way to spend a free night

A free night for me ideally is spent with my friends or my family. I am not too fussed on what the actual activity is, however I do enjoy something that allows me to be competitive. Whether it is a sport, bored game, or simply having a good time with my loved ones, I really enjoy being out!

Favorite spot on campus

My absolute favorite spot on campus is the Marriot Center. The reason this is my favorite spot is because of all the things I have done there so far. I was able to participate in NSO there, go to the weekly devotionals, and listen to acclaimed speakers. I also look forward to attending sporting events in the arena. This place is so amazing to meet new people and interact with those you wouldn't normally see.
