Enthusiastic Business and Communication senior who loves sharing GW and DC!
Hi! I’m Tamera, a senior studying Business and Communication, and after four years at GW, I’ve definitely picked up a few tricks along the way! I’m super involved with Orientation and Family Engagement, so I know all the tips, shortcuts, traditions, and little things that can make your GW experience so much better. I’ve also been involved in a community service sorority, hosted my own radio show, worked with the Nashman Center for Civic Engagement, and currently work at the George Washington University Textile Museum, which is one of those little-known spots on campus that you might otherwise walk right past! I’ve gotten to know both campus and DC really well, so I can help you make the most of being in the heart of the nation’s capital. I know the best study spots, places to eat, hidden gems, underrated things to do, and the spots that students actually love. Whether you want to see the classic DC landmarks or find something a little more off the beaten path, I’ve got you. I’m here to give you the real GW experience, answer all the questions you might have, and make sure you leave with a few new favorite spots!

Clubs, organizations & involvement
I have been very involved on campus throughout my time at GW. I have been a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), a community service sorority, for two years and have served on the Executive Board as Professional Development Chair. I also host my own radio show at GW, which has been a fun way to explore my interest in communication and connect with other students. I have also been involved with GW Orientation and Family Engagement, serving as an Orientation Leader last summer and as a Student Coordinator for the Family Engagement team this summer. In addition, I work at the George Washington University Textile Museum as a Community Engagement Assistant and previously worked with the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement, GW’s on-campus community service office. Lastly, I’m a residential assistant, or RA, for my dorm hall. Through these experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to work with students, families, and the broader GW community in a variety of ways.

Describe your college experience
My transition to college was definitely an adjustment, especially coming from home and learning how to be more independent. Over time, I’ve become much more comfortable putting myself out there, meeting new people, and getting involved on campus. Between being a double major, getting involved in different organizations, and working on campus, I’ve learned a lot about myself and grown more confident. College has definitely had its challenges, but overall, it has been a really rewarding experience and I’m grateful for the people and opportunities I’ve found along the way.
Tip for future students
My biggest tip for future students would be to get involved and say yes to opportunities, even if they seem outside of your comfort zone. Some of my best college experiences and friendships have come from getting involved on campus and meeting people I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. I’d also say not to compare yourself to other people. Everyone is on their own journey, and college looks different for everyone. Don’t feel like you have to have everything figured out or be at the same place as someone else. Focus on yourself, enjoy the experience, and make the most of the time you have because it goes by a lot faster than you think.
Favorite class
My favorite class has been Organizational Communication. I really enjoyed learning about how communication shapes the way people work together, especially in professional and team environments. I liked that we could connect what we were learning to real situations in the workplace, and it made me realize how important strong communication is to being successful in business.
Career goals
After college, I hope to pursue a career that combines business and communication, where I can work with people, build relationships, and be creative. I’m still exploring exactly what I want to do, but I’m interested in opportunities in marketing, communications, public relations, or community engagement. Ultimately, I want to find a career that I’m passionate about, allows me to make an impact, and gives me opportunities to keep learning and growing.
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal way to spend a free night would be getting dinner with friends and then finding something fun to do around the city. I love being able to explore DC, try new restaurants or places, and just spend time with people I’m close with. If I’m staying in, though, I’m always happy with a good movie, snacks, and a relaxed night with friends.

Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is definitely Kogan Plaza, an outdoor seating area right outside our main library, Gelman Library. It’s a place where students can study, eat, hang out with friends, or just take a break between classes. I have so many memories there throughout my time at GW. In the winter, we would pile up the snow in the plaza and have silly little snowball fights, and in the summer I’ve spent time chalking on the sidewalks. It’s more than just a place to sit, it’s a spot where so many of my favorite college memories have happened.
