Economics and Math major from abroad; self-assigned actor and food critic :)
Hi! I’m Gavin and I'm currently a sophomore at Vanderbilt. I plan on double majoring in Economics and Math, and potentially also do a minor in Psychology. I lived in Dubai before moving to Nashville, so it was quite a big cultural change for me, but I've really enjoyed my time here and have met many great people. Usually, I'll be rehearsing for a play, studying (or not) at Owen, playing badminton at the Rec, and occasionally you'll catch me grabbing a bowl at Blenz. I’m more than happy to share what my experience has been like, especially as an international student, and answer any questions about classes, campus life, Nashville, or just adjusting to college in general.

Describe your college experience
Overall, my first year of college has been fantastic. I’ve been able to find people I really belong with, take classes that I genuinely enjoyed, and get involved in all kinds of clubs and events. That being said, the beginning was definitely a little difficult. I didn’t know anyone when I first arrived, and I honestly felt pretty lonely at times. But as time went on, I started meeting more people and eventually found friends that I really clicked with. As for everyday college life, eating at the dining halls and living in the dorms were never really a problem for me. The food definitely isn’t the same as what I’m used to at home, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Plus, there are plenty of dining halls to choose from, so at least there’s always some variety.
Tip for future students
If you’re planning to join any clubs or organizations, I would definitely recommend applying as early as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute, because you might miss a deadline or find that the club is already full. Applying early also shows that you’re genuinely interested and eager to get involved. It’s always better to be ahead of the game rather than rushing to apply at the very end.
Favorite class
Introduction to Poetry - We were able to create our own poems and share it amongst one another, give insightful feedback to our peers, and talk about our inspirations in writing our peoms.
Career goals
I want to go into sales after college. I really enjoy talking to people and building relationships, so I think it would be a good fit for me. Eventually, I’d love to use that experience to start my own business.
Ideal way to spend a free night
For me, an ideal night would be grabbing dinner with friends and then heading downtown together. Not necessarily to drink or party, but just to walk around, talk, and enjoy the weather and the atmosphere of Nashville.
High school or secondary school
Dubai American Academy
Favorite spot on campus
My favorite place on campus would have to be the Owen Library. It’s a quiet place where I can study, get some work done, or just sit around and chill. At the same time, it’s super spacious and modern, so it never feels too cramped or overwhelming.
