Hi there, I'm Val! I am about to embark on my sophomore year of college pursuing my Political Science degree. I plan on going to law school and becoming a lawyer, with this making connections has been my number one priority! University can feel incredibly overwhelming at first, especially as a out of state student... On your tour I hope to give you ALL the tips and tricks that only experience gives students! During my first year at UW I've gotten involved with student government, Greek life, clubs, annual events and volunteered. I've definitely had quite the first year experience and I'd love to share with others the best attractions, teachers, dorms, organizations, etc. with other incoming freshman!

Describe your college experience

As an out of state student with no family at the UW I wanted to hit the ground running in terms of finding a community. Coming here I was absolutely terrified, everything seemed daunting and I made so many mistakes. I ultimately learned to just enjoy every moment, even when I was stressed or having a hard time. SO many emotions are felt during that first transition month and I welcomed all of them, by putting myself out there and talking to new people I had the best first year experience!

Tip for future students

Talk to everyone you meet, seriously! Paths are so intertwined at the UW, I've gotten so many opportunities and made so many friendships because I took the time out of my day to simply greet others and what do you know they happen to be running a organization you wanted to join!

Favorite class

My favorite class at the UW was my first Political Science class with Megan Francis, American Democracy. Since it was my first time taking a class specialized in something I wanted to learn I was ecstatic and Francis did not disappoint. She is renowned for her teachings in politics, and an amazing lecturer. She was able to effortlessly explain major themes or systems in an engaging manner allowing me to fully comprehend and apply what I was learning. Outside of the lecture hall she was also very personable during her office hours, I always found a safe space with her.

Career goals

After my undergrad I hope to attend Law School at the University of Washington and go on to become a corporate lawyer.

Ideal way to spend a free night

To attend a late night city event hosted by Seattle like the nighttime pike place market with friends! I love going to city events as you get to meet so many people and enjoy Seattle's beauty all for free. I would end the night with a dinner at a new spot by UW, there are so many places on the ave and I love getting to know the local food vendors.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite place on campus by far is Denny Field! I think it may be an overused favorite place but it is definitely with reason. So many events happen on Denny Field that really bring students together. One of my favorites was field day where lots of student organizations came out and tabled while local bands played! It felt so college seeing everyone with their friends and getting to learn more about different groups on campus.
