University of California, Berkeley
Data Science Student at UC Berkeley
Hey! I'm Louis, a junior at UC Berkeley studying Data Science. I've spent the last year getting to know this campus pretty well, from pulling late nights at Doe Library to navigating the best spots between classes. Outside of school I do consulting and have worked at a few companies including SpaceX and some Bay Area startups. I love talking about food, music and gym and I'm excited to show you around!

Describe your college experience
Coming into Berkeley was a bit of a shock. The pace is fast and everyone around you seems like they have it figured out. It took me a semester to stop trying to keep up with everyone else and just focus on what I actually wanted to get out of being here. Once I did that, things clicked. I got involved in consulting, picked up internships, and started building things I was genuinely proud of. Berkeley will push you, but that's kind of the point. You're surrounded by like-minded individuals and there'll be constant pressure from your peers, but that's what keeps you dialed in.
Tip for future students
Get off campus and into the real world as early as you can. Berkeley is in the Bay Area for a reason. The startups, the companies, the people doing interesting things are right there. Don't wait until junior year to start exploring. Also, go to office hours. Seriously.
Favorite class
ENGIN 183, one of the classes in the SCET program. On the surface it's an entrepreneurship class, but it's really about learning how to handle being stuck. You hit walls constantly and the class teaches you how to push through them instead of freezing up. I learned more about my own strengths and weaknesses in that one course than I did in most others combined. It's the kind of class that makes you a better person, not just a better student.
Career goals
I want to work at the intersection of AI and business strategy. Right now I'm doing that through consulting, helping companies figure out how to actually operationalize AI rather than just talk about it. Long term, I'd love to build something of my own, but I want to get a few more years of seeing how companies work from the inside first.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Honestly, drive up to Twin Peaks, find a good spot, and just sit with the view for a while. Something about looking out over the whole city at night resets your brain after a long week. Then head back, throw on a movie, and make something in the kitchen; It is usually something like yogurt and frozen berries too much butter. Simple nights like that are the ones that calms my mind and lower my cortisol levels.
