Describe your college experience
I grew up in a town where the walls of the valley were the extent of my world view. In my junior year of high school, I had the exciting chance to spend three weeks in Korea. It opened my eyes to the fantastic and diverse world I was missing out on. I yearned for more opportunities to travel the word. Where I grew up, I can count on one hand the kids who left my state for school. I was unique in my desire to leave our town. At first I wanted to go to school outside of the United States, but after learning more about the different schools, I realized I needed to go to school in a huge city. The opportunities afforded to me had to be incredible, and I wanted to be exposed to people of different backgrounds. In my town, identity was homogenous and removed from world events. I knew Columbia would be the place for me to meet those different to me and make connections with those whose stories I find fascinating. Also I wanted to go to a big city, and you can't get much bigger than this one.
