Biology major who's been everywhere on campus and lots of places off campus!

HI! I'm Rachel, a biology major here at BYU. I'm from California, and continue to be in love with the mountains and flowers in Utah every day. I didn't know my roommate or most people when I moved in, but I've loved every minute of BYU since then! I love playing pickleball, playing pool with friends, going to the duck pond, and studying in the library with snacks and friends. I know a lot about this campus and have lots of tips for you. I'm excited to show you around and get to know you!

Describe your college experience

I've really enjoyed it so far. I did not expect it to be this tiring, and being away from home is hard. But I've really enjoyed how many things there are to do here. The transition has been hard, but it's been really amazing with how kind and inclusive everyone is. I love how when I'm bored or have nothing to do, there is always something to do or someone who is able to spend time with me.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip is to realize that either it'll be great, or else you'll be done in a couple of minutes anyways so who cares. College is scary! I was very worried about making friends, and often there were times when there were people I barely knew or didn't know at all, and I was scared to invite myself in. I just reminded myself that either it will go great (everyone's trying to make friends anyways), or it won't and I likely won't even be thinking about it tomorrow. Lots of socially embarrassing things have happened, but also I've had some wild and amazing adventures and experiences because of it!

Favorite class

I've loved my biology class a lot. Not only am I learning a lot of new things, but we are learning how to problem solve and think like a scientist, which I am really enjoying.

Career goals

I am hoping to become a physician's assistant, pharmaceutical scientist, therapist, social worker, or something else that combines service with science—especially in the life sciences field.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is with my friends, especially when I get to go off-campus or have a fun adventure! I really just like spending time with them and talking to them, and so I also love a casual night in with them.

Favorite spot on campus

The duck pond! My friends and I have claimed it as "our" spot (like Peter, MJ, and Ned's spot is the roof). I go there all the time and feed the ducks with peas and birdseed. I love to just chill there, nap, study, and everything other the sun.
