ERC Archeology Major gives Honest UCSD Tour

Hi! I'm Helen, (he/she/they), and I'm an ERC Archeology student here to give you a tour with all the pros and cons and expert tips! When I'm not studying or at work, I'm playing double bass in the chamber orchestra, hanging out around the UCSD queer community, and running the TTRPG club as it's president.

Describe your college experience

The transition to college was a tricky thing for me to figure out, but once I got my feet back under me, I hit my stride, learning more about what I wanted from my adult life then I had before.

Tip for future students

Remember that you have more flexibility than you think. Enroll in more classes then you plan to stay in and drop them in time for a refund, go to club meetings and see if you want to stay, try new things and break routines if they will make you feel better.

Favorite class

Underwater Archeology, ANAR 164. Set me on my career path and I have never looked back.

Career goals

Underwater archeology research, grad school, and working at museum curation.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I like to take my free nights to cook, or head to campus for a game of D&D with friends.

High school or secondary school

I went to a small Project Based learning high school, so the transition from a 100 person class to a massive school was a big change.

Previous college

I took classes at Sacramento City College, but only asynchronously.

Helen was an excellent tour guide for our family, including twin rising Juniors who are interested in attending UCSD. This is the first school tour where I have seen either teen really interact and ask questions, which was wonderful and a testament to Helen's personable approach to the tour. We finished the two hour tour with a solid sense of UCSD and the admission process. As a side note, we were auto-matched with Helen by School Scoops and even though her major is not one that our kids are considering, Helen was good at discussing a wide range of majors and each of the UCSD colleges.

extremely satisfied. Very kind to accommodate us, in depth knowledge and useful tips about admissions and university life in San Diego. Flexible and easy going, but also very purposeful and good at touring, planning the route and buildings with customer major in mind and good photo spots and food spots, very authentic and on the ground experience.

Helen’s tour was possibly the most informative tour I’ve had of a campus or any other site. Helen reached out before the tour to ask our interests and major. Since we had so many questions, we opted for a two-hour tour. At the appointed time, Helen was at the meeting spot. After asking how much walking and hills we were able to do, Helen lead us to the dorms, dining halls, gyms, classroom areas, and other facilities that my child was most likely to choose. We did a brief detour based on a question that came up. Helen was able to answer our questions on transportation, dorms, lodging, gyms, studios spaces, and class signup strategies. I am obviously very satisfied.
