Hoosier or Boilermaker? What the Numbers (and a Real Student) Can Tell You About Indiana vs Purdue

Every fall, thousands of Indiana families end up with the same two names at the top of the list: Indiana University Bloomington and Purdue University. They're about two hours apart by car, both Big Ten, both huge, and they meet every year for the Old Oaken Bucket. But they are not interchangeable. The admissions math, the cost, the kind of student each campus is built around and even the texture of an ordinary Tuesday are different. Here is what the data shows and where it stops being useful. If you want to hear it from a student, SchoolScoops has guides at both Indiana and Purdue.
By the Numbers
- Acceptance rate: Purdue admitted 43.4% of 86,953 applicants for fall 2025, a record low, per its class profile. IU admits roughly 78%.
- Testing: IU is test-optional, and 45% of students admitted for fall 2025 applied without scores, according to IU's class profile. Purdue requires SAT or ACT scores.
- In-state tuition and fees: Purdue is $9,992, frozen for a 14th straight year through 2026-27 (Purdue's tuition freeze page). IU is roughly $12,100.
- Out-of-state tuition and fees: Purdue is $28,794. IU is roughly $42,700 for 2026-27. That gap, about $14,000 a year, is the single biggest number in this comparison for out-of-state families.
- Outcomes: Both schools graduate roughly four in five students within six years. Federal College Scorecard data shows Purdue graduates out-earning IU graduates by several thousand dollars a year a decade after enrolling, which mostly reflects Purdue's engineering-heavy mix of majors.
Admissions: One School Picks by Major, the Other Mostly Doesn't
Purdue's overall 43% is misleading. Purdue admits you to a specific college, and it publishes those rates separately. For fall 2025 they ranged from single digits for Professional Flight to above 70% for Pharmacy, with engineering around the mid-30s. Your odds at Purdue depend on which box you check. Changing into a crowded major later isn't guaranteed. IU works more like a traditional university admission, with one important exception: the Kelley School of Business. Kelley applicants answer extra essay prompts, and direct admission to Kelley is a separate, tougher bar than admission to IU. If business is the plan, apply to Kelley directly rather than counting on transferring in.
Cost: Purdue's Freeze Is Real, but Check the Full Bill
Purdue's base tuition hasn't changed since 2012-13, and the university says about 60% of its students graduate without debt. Two caveats: some programs, including engineering, computer science and business, carry differential fees on top of base tuition, and on-campus housing has been tight in recent years, so sophomores often end up in the off-campus rental market. IU charges a flat rate that covers up to 40 credit hours across fall, spring and its short intersessions, which helps students who want to double major or graduate early. Both schools offer merit aid to strong out-of-state applicants, so compare actual offers, not sticker prices. The IU cost page lays out the 2026-27 budget line by line.
Academic Culture
Purdue is a STEM-first campus. Purdue Engineering is one of the largest engineering colleges in the country, and first-year students take a common engineering curriculum before moving into a specific discipline. That second step is competitive, and it shapes how hard students work freshman year. The social rhythm follows: weeknights are for problem sets, and students describe a grind-it-out, collaborative culture. IU's center of gravity is broader. Kelley is the headline, but the Jacobs School of Music, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Luddy School of Informatics all draw students who wouldn't consider Purdue. Students who aren't sure about their major usually find IU easier to explore.
Campus and Town
Bloomington is one of the Big Ten's classic college towns: limestone buildings, a wooded campus, Kirkwood Avenue for food and coffee, rolling hills and state parks nearby. The Little 500 bike race in April is IU's biggest weekend. West Lafayette is flatter and more compact, with campus life concentrated along State Street and a growing downtown across the Wabash in Lafayette. Neither town is a big city. IU is about an hour from Indianapolis and Purdue about an hour and a half from Chicago's outer suburbs, so plan a car or a bus pass either way. For housing, both put first-years on campus. See IU Residential Programs and Services and Purdue University Residences to compare hall options and costs.
Athletics and Game Days
IU is a basketball school first. Assembly Hall on a winter night is the tradition people bring up. IU Athletics football has recently become much more competitive, and fall Saturdays feel bigger than they used to. Purdue is a two-sport school, with Ross-Ade Stadium in the fall and Mackey Arena in the winter, and Purdue Athletics has built one of the more consistent basketball programs in the conference. If game days matter to your student, visit on one. They show you the campus at its loudest.
Where They Diverge Most
- Selectivity by major: Purdue's odds swing widely by college. IU's are more uniform, except for Kelley.
- Out-of-state price: Purdue's sticker price is about $14,000 a year lower.
- Academic personality: Purdue is built around engineering, science and technology. IU is broader, with top business, music, public policy and informatics programs.
- Changing your mind: switching majors is easier at IU than into a crowded Purdue program.
- Feel: Bloomington is hilly, wooded and artsy. West Lafayette is compact, practical and busy.
Questions Worth Asking Current Students
- At Purdue: how competitive was your move from first-year engineering into your major, and what happened to friends who didn't get their first choice?
- At IU: if you're in Kelley, how cutthroat is it? If you're not, did you ever feel like a second-tier student?
- How hard is it to find off-campus housing for sophomore year, and when do people start looking?
- What do weeknights and weekends actually look like?
- If you had it to do over, would you choose the other school? Why or why not?
The Bottom Line
If your student is set on engineering or computing and wants the lowest out-of-state price in the Big Ten, Purdue is hard to beat, but only if they can get into the specific college they want. If they want business, music, policy or room to explore, IU is the better fit, and Kelley direct admission is the key target. The best way to decide between two schools this close is to spend time at both and ask students the questions above.
