UCSC - Dianne A - Microbiology

Hello! My name is Dianne Agpalo, and I’m a student at UCSC studying Microbiology! Other than playing with small microbes, I love photography, watching movies (especially Ghibli movies), listening to music, and dancing! I’m also in a dance team here on campus (Haluan Hip Hop Dance Troupe). I can’t wait to meet you!

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was definitely nervous but so fun! Being born and raised in WA, it was scary to step foot into a new state and into a whole new chapter And now finishing my first year of college, homesickness is inevitable, but I don’t regret taking that jump of going out of state because I met such amazing people, I’ve tried so many new things (Joined a dance team impulsively), and overall have grown more into myself in just one year! The people here are so sweet and inspiring.

Tip for future students

Definitely browse at the resources (Clubs, Academic Resources, Events/Conferences), that are available here at UCSC! With my major: Microbiology, I have a specific goal for what I want to study, and there are so many resources for me that is able to fit with that specific goal of study.

Favorite class

I enjoyed my Intro to Biotechnology class! I appreciated how much my professor emphasizes the importance of ethics when it comes to Science, and we had class discussions about things that I didn’t really know were controversial in science so it opened my eyes on that. Plus, she was one of the sweetest professors I’ve ever had.

Career goals

I did a small passion project in high school about the Gut Microbiome and during my time here in college, I hope to not only expand that research project, but to maybe make / be a part of other research projects (Microbiology based) with probiotics, gut health, or general microbial nutrition. I also have an idea for pursuing something in the Biotechnological sciences too. Overall, after my time at UCSC, I want to hopefully do a masters program and gain industry lab experience.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal free night would be a movie night (Specifcally Studio Ghibli), with my college roommates and eating multiple cups of ramen (Has happened before, this is my tried and true).
