I am a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Virginia from Charlotte, North Carolina. I am involved in student council, a professional engineering fraternity, sorority life, research, intramural sports, and plan to go abroad. In my free time, I love doing yoga, walking around campus, trying different coffee shops, and hiking. I absolutely love UVA and everything it has to offer, and I love showing it to other people to bring them into my world.

Describe your college experience

As soon as I got to school, I felt like I fit in. I, like any college student, was worried I would not immediately make friends or would feel overwhelmed with schoolwork. but UVA really puts an emphasis on making sure students feel wanted and comfortable as they begin their first year. I became really close with my roommate and made friends through classes. I signed up for at least five different clubs just to try, each being more accepting than the next. I talked to my teachers to get to know them, and they showed so much interest in my wellbeing as a student. Everything has been amazing.

Tip for future students

Get involved in all of the things you want to do, it is so important to see if something is interesting to you and pursue that. But, if you have too much on your plate, don’t feel ashamed to pull back and focus on the things you are most passionate about first. It’s important to take breaks, for example by taking a quick walk around campus, grabbing a coffee, seeing or calling family, and utilizing the university’s support systems.

Favorite class

My favorite class is Introduction to Entrepreneurship. As an Engineer, it was such an amazing opportunity to get to know more students outside of engineering and immerse myself in new content. This class was very self-driven. We had a few case studies, but it was mostly a group project for the entire semester. To this day, I am still close with my group. We were so unique: one of us was a fourth year Comm student, one was a third year exchange student from Ireland, one was a second year Politics, Philosophy, and Law major, and I was a first year Chemical Engineer. But that never stopped us from getting close and spending time together outside of class. The teacher really pulled it all together with his unique experiences and support. I could not recommend the course more.

Career goals

I hope to work in biotechnology or pharmaceuticals in a major city for a few years after college, then go to law school to become a Patent Lawyer.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Meet up with my friends and go to the corner to hang out, see other students, listen to music, and have fun. Then go back home and order late night doordash and watch a movie.
