My name is Tia Magnolia Merriman. I am an undergraduate in the UCLA Pre-Public Affairs Program with passions for Public Policy, Public Relations, and Social Media Management, as well as interests in comedic and dramatic writing, entrepreneurship, political science, and fashion. I am half Black and half White, Jewish, and proudly American, with my upbringing in the vibrant city of Chicago shaping my perspective through its culture, architecture, and energy. My close bond with my mother and the support of my friends have been central to my values, character, and happiness. Professionally, I have gained experience as a PR Beauty Intern with Infinity Creative Agency, a Student Assistant at the UCLA Textbook Store, and a swim instructor at both the Griffin Club LA and the YMCA—roles that strengthened my skills in communication, teamwork, negotiation, sales, and adaptability. As I continue to balance academics and work, I draw on my background and experiences to develop a unique perspective on client management and leadership in today’s social-political climate.

Describe your college experience

My college transition was easy compared to most others. As an LA Native, I know the city well, so moving from DTLA to Westwood was a small change. It was hard to initially adapt to the fast-paced quarter system, but after getting the hang of it, I can say that I have had an amazing college experience. I have gotten to know so many new extracurriculars, friends, skills, clubs, and more. Going into my third year, I will utilize my experience with Los Angeles and with college in general to guide me as I prepare to complete my upper divisions and enter the workforce.

Tip for future students

If I were to give tips to future students, I would reccomend immediately joining cultural groups and extracurricular sports, which are a great way to stay active and connected to your community while away from home. I would make sure to utilize public transport and explore the city. Additionally, I wuld encourage new students explore and use all campus resource centers if they need assistance with coursework, writing, enrollment, financial aid, and more.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Oceanography. As a LA native, I grew up close to the ocean and enjoyed getting to learn about how it works for a general education requirement. The coursework was refreshing and the lab demos were hands on. I got to take this class with my roommates, and it made it more fun to be able to collaborate with them during class and on general coursework and studying.

Career goals

After college, I plan to continue working in the Public Relations industry, hopefull in the fashion or beauty sector. I hope to travel and save up to be financially independant, and possibly attend law school after I take a year away from school to work.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My favorite way to spend a free night is with my friends, going to the gym or taking a pilates class and getting something to eat together afterwards.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot is the Stone Canyon Creek. It's a hidden creek neighboring the Graduate Business School. It's not a popular spot, so I enjoy coming here and studying between classes. There are a few trees that you can sit on comfortably, and it's nice to be able to take a break in nature during the day.
