Stanford sophomore studying Econ & International Relations
Hey! I'm Valerie, a rising sophomore at Stanford double majoring in Econ & IR. On campus, I'm involved in the Alpha Phi sorority, Stanford Management Group, Cardinal Policy Group, and Stanford Debate Society. In my free time, I conduct research on U.S-Russia relations with a think tank, work as a guide at a digital art gallery, and tutor Latin. I love watching basketball and spend a lot of time writing and reading poetry. Looking forward to meeting you!

Describe your college experience
I feel as though this is the stereotypical answer, but I love Stanford. My favorite part of this school is its openness: whether the notorious startup culture (which I'll justify and defend on our tour, trust) or the organic friendships made in and outside of classrooms, Stanford has welcomed me in every way possible.
Tip for future students
Don't, be, afraid. Reach out to classmates you think are cool, get coffee with your favorite professors, go fountain-hopping even if crowds are watching. Stanford is what you make of it, and there's so much to be proactive for.
Favorite class
"CAPITALS," a buffet course on all sorts of capital cities at their most prominent/influential times (eg. ancient Rome, renaissance Florence, imperial Beijing, etc). Though this class is outside both my majors, it significantly added to my world view and knowledge about different cultures. Andrei Pesic, my professor, was also so amazing that I went on to take "Art and the Market" with him!
Career goals
Work in policy -- economic advisor to different countries, diplomacy with US Dept of State, UN/IMF/World Bank.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Get dinner with friends at Macarena in Palo Alto. Dessert at Somi Somi. Watch a mystery movie in the dorm lounge before going to Half Moon Bay for a bonfire. Come back before midnight and laugh and talk in someone's room till 3am.
