Second year biochemistry student

Hi, my name is Katelynn! I'm from the North Bay area, and I absolutely love UCSB, having enjoyed my first year very much. As my second year starts, I look forward to continuing my studies in biochemistry and participating in student life through sports, academics, and the social scene. I am a biochemistry major, but I am also pursuing a minor in Spanish, and I am a member of the club rowing team! I am also part of various clubs such as the Society of Cosmetic Chemistry and the Campus Dems. Before committing to UCSB, I was so torn about where I wanted to spend the next 4 years, but as soon as I stepped onto campus, I knew it was the school for me. I feel like I have been able to appreciate so many aspects of this school in such a short time. I hope to provide valuable insight for prospective students to help them make this important decision!

Describe your college experience

Going into college was scary, but I have made the most amazing friends and truly made the most out of the experience, which has changed me for the better.

Tip for future students

Saying yes to new (and safe) experiences is always a great choice to help open up and meet people. Also, try to not stress about things out of your control but make sure to keep track of deadlines to help manage your time.

Favorite class

PORT32, Ocean Cultures: People, Routes, and Environments in the Portuguese-Speaking World. Such an interesting class, and the professor, Corrêa de Sá, is very passionate about the subject, so the material presented is very well put together.

Career goals

While I am unsure exactly what I want to do, I am leaning towards pharmaceuticals, whether that be in design or as a pharmacist. I also have an interest in cosmetic chemistry.

Ideal way to spend a free night

A free weeknight always pairs well with some self-care. I love spending that time reading, doing yoga, taking a walk, or drawing. However on a weekend, going out with friends is always a good time.

High school or secondary school

Montgomery High School

Favorite spot on campus

Campus Point is a classic fave spot, but the views are great and it's so close to the dorms which makes it even better.

Meeting point

Base of Storke Tower on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus
