Sam: Mechanical Engineering and Musical Theater Major, Dance Minor at CU Boulder

Hello! My name is Sam, and I am currently a sophomore at CU Boulder. I am a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Musical Theater, with a minor in Dance. My dream job would be to design theme park rides, preferably at Disney or Universal. My freshman year, I spent time living in dorms and commuting to campus, so I can give information about both housing situations. I also have a lot of helpful tips for anyone who is looking to double major or add a minor. In my free time, I love going to concerts, playing with my dogs, and hanging out with my boyfriend, friends, and family. I learned so many amazing things about CU Boulder when I took my tour, so I would love to provide the same amazing experience to anyone interested in CU!

Describe your college experience

I honestly struggled a fair amount transitioning to college. I went to a very small high school, and I was used to being around the same people my whole life. CU Boulder is a super big school, so I was really worried about meeting people and making friends. However, on my first day of classes, I met some incredible people. I don't think I've ever bonded with a group of people faster than I did with my musical theater friends. The first year was still very difficult, especially with figuring out new ways to study, but having amazing friends made the transition so much easier.

Tip for future students

I think one of my biggest tips is to just put yourself out there. I feel like everyone says this, and it sounds really scary. But honestly, if you want to maximize your time at CU, you need to go to events, office hours, join study groups, make new friends, go to football games, and just put yourself out there. I didn't put myself out there enough my freshman year, and I seriously regret it.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my Musical Theater Studio class. All of my friends are in this class, and we did something different almost every day. The class was so welcoming, and even though it was pretty early, the people made it all worth it.

Career goals

It has always been a dream of mine to work as an engineer for the Walt Disney Company. I've been going to Disney World since I was young, and my memories there have always held a special place in my heart. I love seeing the joy that people feel when riding the attractions there, and I would like to bring that same joy to even more people by creating theme park rides.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I'm a bit of a nerd, so an ideal night would be me hanging out with my boyfriend and reading a book. I love reading, and I have a bit of an issue with buying too many books. I also would love to spend a night bowling, swimming, or baking something.
