Pre-Law Freshman excited to share the Rutgers experience!
Hi! I’m Sam, a freshman on the pre-law track, double majoring in Public Policy and Latino & Caribbean Studies. I’m originally from Colombia but I live in Hamilton, NJ and I’m a commuter student. I came into Rutgers not knowing a single person, yet this campus quickly became my home away from home. On my free time, you’ll usually catch me at the Werblin Rec Center working out, or at one of the many studying spaces across campus locking-in on my readings. You’ll find out pretty quickly that, despite it not being my top choice, I genuinely love Rutgers and I’m glad this is where I ended up at! I’d be happy to show you all the great places on campus, including the best eats, and give you an inside scoop of what life is like at Rutgers. Come with questions!

Describe your college experience
I’m a commuter student commuting 40 minutes every day, which makes it a little bit more difficult to adjust to college life, especially at a school as big as Rutgers. However, my experience transitioning to Rutgers has been quite enjoyable given that the university really prides itself on supporting its students through various programs and resources, and the student body is generally very friendly and welcoming.
Tip for future students
Don’t be afraid to be extroverted and talk to anyone you come across. All new students are at the same spot where they are looking for friends but are afraid to start a conversation, so taking that first step will guarantee you to gain a new connection.
Favorite class
Intro to Latino Studies 595:101 with Dr. Ulla Berg has so far been my favorite class because it has allowed me to view the world through a historical and culturally diverse lens. It is a great introduction class for someone interested in the humanities.
Career goals
Go to law school and become an international or immigration lawyer.
Ideal way to spend a free night
I like to spend a free night either working out at the gym or walking around College Ave with friends!
High school or secondary school
Hamilton High School West
Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is The Yard at College Ave, because it is a great spot to study or hang out with friends. Great food spots surround it; it’s always lively, and the big screen is always on with sports games.
