Outgoing film & media studies major with a love for the outdoors.
Hi! My name is Kylie and i’m a second year Film & Media studies major. I’m from the Bay Area and like to spend my free time painting, reading, hiking, watching movies and spending time with friends. When I first came to UCSB, I felt lost not knowing where my place was. After some exploring, I quickly found organizations on campus that I truly love and consider other members of to be some of my closest friends. You can usually find me studying in the Arts library, enjoying live music at Woodstock’s, or at the beach (of course). I would be happy to share my genuine thoughts and advice to any students/families interested in UCSB, whether it be about Dorm life, getting involved, Isla Vista and academics! I love to talk to people so please feel free to come with questions!

Describe your college experience
So far, my college experience has been wonderful. Last year as a freshman I lived in the Santa Rosa dorms in a triple, as I transition into sophomore year I’m moving into an apartment in IV. I’m a film major and have found most of my major related classes to be engaging and exciting. I was not very interested in greek life coming in but really wanted to be apart of a community on campus, so when I found DKA, a co-ed professional fraternity/club for students interested in filmmaking I knew I had found my place. Additionally, I found YDSA, a campus organization focused on allowing students to voice their political concerns and to work together to make positive change. This year, I look forward to playing an active role in my clubs, participating in school activities, and spending time outdoors with my friends.
Tip for future students
Definitely don’t be afraid to socialize with people and put yourself out there! When I arrived I felt worried about how I would be perceived by people but I realized very quickly that this campus is vast with many organizations and that there’s something for everyone! Also, do not be afraid to go to your professors/TA’s office hours, it’s easy to forget but they are there to help us and want you to feel encouraged to come to them if needed.
Favorite class
FAMST 90 with Professor Damluji was a very engaging and insightful class. I liked that we had simple assignments frequently to keep me present in the material and that she spaced out the bigger projects. I really enjoyed the screenings she selected and found myself looking forward to attending her class.
Career goals
After college, I want to have a job working in the entertainment industry. I haven’t decided what specifically because I want to keep my options open but either something in film production or management. I have always really enjoyed working with large groups of people so being on film sets has always been very fun for me. Additionally, being able to learn from likeminded people’s creative ideas is a big inspiration to me.
Ideal way to spend a free night
An ideal free night to me would be going to the beach for sunset, getting dinner with my friends and going to see live music. After getting home, a hot shower, something for dessert and crawling into my bed with a good book is all I could ever really ask for.

Favorite spot on campus
My favorite spot on campus is the lookout spot on the hill above campus point. I love sitting there and observing the surfers below, it has a beautiful view of the ocean.
