Outgoing, CS Major, here to provide a fun experience touring the umd campus
Hi! I’m Arav, a Computer Science student who’s spent way too much time exploring pretty much every corner of UMD. You’ll usually find me hanging out with friends, playing cricket, checking out different spots around campus, or somewhere in Iribe working on CS projects. I’ve also studied abroad and been involved in everything from sports to AI/ML clubs, so I’ve gotten to experience UMD in a lot of different ways. I’d love to show you the places students actually hang out, some hidden spots around campus, and give you the real student perspective on what life at Maryland is like.

Describe your college experience
My college experience at UMD has honestly been amazing. The transition was a little overwhelming at first because UMD is such a big school, but it quickly started to feel like home. I’ve been able to challenge myself academically in Computer Science while also meeting people through sports, clubs, campus events, and studying abroad. Some of my best experiences have actually come from trying things outside of my major and getting involved with different parts of the UMD community.
Tip for future students
Figure out what clubs and organizations you’re interested in early and actually get involved. I’d also recommend starting off with a manageable course load while you adjust to college. Most importantly, have fun and make time for things outside of academics because the years go by really fast.
Favorite class

Career goals
I’m studying Computer Science, so I hope to work in software engineering after college, ideally in a role involving AI or machine learning. Long term, I want to keep building my technical skills while working on projects and products that have a real-world impact.
Ideal way to spend a free night
Chilling with friends, exploring campus at night, grabbing food, or going out to the bars in College Park.
High school or secondary school
Suncity School
Favorite spot on campus
I have a few favorite spots, including McKeldin Mall, the South Campus Dining Hall gardens, and Reisse Park on top of the Brendan Iribe Center, but my favorite is probably the seating area outside the School of Public Health. I’ve always liked that area because it feels quieter and more relaxed than most of campus, especially when the weather is nice. It’s a good place to walk around, sit for a little, or just take a break between everything going on during the day.
