I am a friendly, outgoing individual majoring in marine biology!

Hello, my name is Sophia and I am an incoming sophomore. I’m from LA county and I love everything ocean and animal related, and hope to make a positive change through my conservation career goals. I fell in love with UCSD and would love to share my experiences and advice to incoming students through authentic insights into the school.

Describe your college experience

The first quarter at UCSD was one of the hardest times for me having to adjust to all the new changes, and navigating the campus was pretty difficult because it’s so big. But by winter quarter I made great friends and really fell in love with UCSD and La Jolla. Now I can’t wait to start the new school year!

Tip for future students

Finding a good community to involve yourself with and friends will make the transition to college soo much easier. Finding someone to sit next to in lecture for the quarter also really helped me stay engaged in the lecture and have a study partner as well as a friend! And don’t be scared to try new things because you may fall in love with someone you wouldn’t have thought you’d love.

Favorite class

BILD 2, multicellular life, was my favorite class mainly because I had an incredible professor and I learned SO MUCH about the human body and how it adapts to different physiological changes.

Career goals

I hope to work in marine conservation! Still figuring out if I want to work in research, policy, or animal care but I’m trying out everything to see what sticks.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Hanging out with all my friends in their dorm and playing Just Dance or board games!

High school or secondary school

John Burroughs High

Favorite spot on campus

Glider Port is where you will see the best sunsets of your life and they have good food at the cafe. I loved to explore the hiking trails around there too and it was walking distance from my dorm.
