University of Texas

Hi! My name is Sophia! I’m a freshman education major here at UT Austin!

I play volleyball (indoor and beach), am involved in UT Seek, where we teach STEM subjects to underprivileged students, and do research in a Chemical Engineering Lab. I kind of have my eggs in two baskets right now since I’m switching majors, so I can answer questions about either pathway—STEM and/or liberal arts!

Describe your college experience

Transitioning to college was a whole lot of changes at once, but what grounded me was finding friends through doing things I love like playing volleyball. Volleyball feels like a community now and I love it! Overall, college has been so helpful in finding my own footing and has given me the opportunity to branch out in so many ways! Being so connected to everyone and everything at UT Austin is a once in a life time experience!

Tip for future students

I would say don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, because it might be scary at first, but it will pay off in no time! If I could go back in time, I would tell my past self to not worry because everything will turn out good!

Favorite class

My favorite class has been Organic Chemistry Lab 1 because I love changing the learning style from lecture-heavy to hands on experiments! We work in pairs of two, but we also get to chat with everyone in the lab, so it’s been a great place full of laughs along with meaningful discoveries!

Career goals

After college, I hope to teach elementary school students. In a perfect world, I could use my Spanish skills to teach underprivileged kids in a foreign country! I think that would be awesome!

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night would be a mix of volleyball, poker, and going home to see my family and my dog!
