Hi! My name is Lucy, and I’m an incoming fourth-year Psychology major at UCSC on the pre-health track. As a first-generation college student, I know how overwhelming the college process can feel, especially when you’re trying to figure everything out for the first time. Coming into UCSC, there were so many things I wish I had known earlier about academics, housing, campus resources, study spots, student jobs, and getting involved. Through my experience in sorority life, working on campus, and navigating pre-health, I’ve learned a lot about how to make the most of UCSC both academically and socially. I love helping prospective students get an honest look into campus life and answering the questions you actually care about. Whether you’re curious about pre-health, first-gen experiences, Greek life, off-campus housing, or what day-to-day life in Santa Cruz is really like, I’d be excited to share my experience and help you feel more prepared and confident.

Describe your college experience

My transition into college was both exciting and challenging, especially as a first-generation student navigating everything on my own. Coming to UCSC taught me a lot about independence, time management, and finding community. At first, adjusting to the quarter system and balancing academics with social life felt overwhelming, but over time I found my rhythm. Through joining a pre-health sorority, working on campus, and exploring different career paths, I’ve built a strong support system and learned how to make the most of my college experience. Overall, UCSC has helped me grow academically, socially, and personally.

Tip for future students

My biggest tip is to ask questions early and take advantage of campus resources sooner rather than later. As a first-generation student, I didn’t realize how many opportunities and support systems existed until later, like office hours, advising, research opportunities, and student organizations. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, because building community makes a huge difference. Also, be prepared for a lot of walking and always give yourself extra time to get to class!

Favorite class

Some of my favorite classes at UCSC have been Cognitive Psychology (PSYC 20), Organic Chemistry 8B, and a South Asian Music GE. I loved PSYC 20 because learning about perception and illusions completely changed how I think about the mind. Ochem 8B challenged me a lot, but having a great professor made it feel much more manageable and rewarding. My music GE was also memorable because it gave me the chance to explore a new subject with friends and reminded me how important it is to enjoy the learning process too.

Career goals

After college, I plan to take 1–2 gap years to strengthen my patient care experience and continue building my clinical skills. My goal is to apply to Physician Assistant programs and pursue a career where I can work closely with patients, provide compassionate care, and make healthcare more accessible.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is grabbing food with friends, whether that’s trying new spots in Santa Cruz or making a fun trip up to San Jose. After spending a few years here, I’ve gotten to know both the local favorites and the best places nearby, so I love mixing it up and exploring.
