Everything CMU with Emmy! (Information Systems Student | Delta Gamma)

Hi! My name is Emmy, and I am a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University. Here's a little bit about me: I am an Information Systems Major concentrating in UI/UX and AI Management. I am involved in Greek Life through Delta Gamma and am very enthusiastic about our spring activities! I love to cook, listen to music, and explore Pittsburgh. I am originally from Virginia, so I can also provide insight on being an out-of-state student. I would love to show you more about Carnegie Mellon and what it truly has to offer!

Describe your college experience

Coming into college, I was nervous about balancing academics and my social life, as Carnegie Mellon is notoriously rigorous. While academics are spotlighted at CMU, I also found the community to be extremely welcoming. From orientation through final exams, there was always someone I could turn to for support and advice. I found this through many outlets like my college counselor, my RA, orientation leaders, classmates, roommates, my extracurricular activities, and so many more. I have found my home away from home at CMU. It is so easy to become involved around campus and challenge yourself not only academically but socially as well. One of my favorite events from my first year was Spring Carnival, specifically Booth. Through this, different student organizations are able to spend time planning, building, and decorating a booth the size of a small home or apartment. This opportunity was so extremely fun, and it was amazing to see all of the hard work that my fellow students put in.

Tip for future students

1. Say 'Yes!" This is something I take with me everywhere. It is so important to take advantage of new opportunities even if they are different or outside of your comfort zone. This allows you to find what you are passionate about and experience so much more. 2. Remember, everyone else is experiencing the same things as you are. You are not alone. It is easy to forget this as you get wrapped up in your first-year, but this is one of the most grounding things to keep on your mind. All of your peers are transitioning to a new environment just like you are -- don't be afraid to talk about it! 3. Explore Pittsburgh! This city genuinely has so much to offer. You are given access to public transport with your student ID -- use it! There is so much to discover, from food and coffee spots to parks and museums.

Favorite class

My favorite class has been my Dietrich Grand Challenge Seminar: Appalachia: Development, Decline, and Identity in America. I learned about Appalachian culture and society through class discussions, books, movies, and papers. This class fulfilled a general education requirement, but I found it so enriching and exciting to learn about.

Career goals

I plan on working in the tech field, specifically with User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX). I have found my coursework concerning this truly interesting so far, as it mixes both my love for the creative and the technical.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I would spend a free night adventuring into Squirrel Hill with my friends to try a new dessert spot, watch a movie, or go thrifting!

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite spot on campus is De Fer. De Fer is an on-campus coffee shop with two locations, one in the library and one in Resnik (Residential and Eating Area). I love their seasonal drinks and pastries, and I find it to be my favorite place to study with all of the natural light.
