Hello! My name is Melissa and I am starting my second year at the University of Central Florida. I am lucky to be a part of the amazing Burnett Honors College, where I am able to participate in countless activities. I am also a student within CECS, the college of engineering and computer science, studying Materials Science and Engineering, with a minor in Mathematics. I am actively participating in undergraduate research, RSO’s (registered student organizations), study abroad, and many more activities!

Describe your college experience

My college experience hasn’t been the most traditional. This is because I am a commuter, meaning I drive about one hour to school every day. Contrary to what you may believe though, I have been able to get involved in campus in countless ways. Primarily through clubs and organizations, I have been able to make friends and establish professional connections. Having meetings and social events has helped me integrate into campus life. Also, I have the amazing opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. My primary focus is nano materials for technological applications. Apart from this, I have access to countless resources and mentors through UCF, the Burnett Honors College, and CECS. Finally, I recently had the privilege of studying abroad at one of UCF’s international centers at Barcelona, Spain. This experience changed my life and I am so grateful for it.

Tip for future students

My main advice for new students is to get involved in everything that you can and to seize every opportunity that you come across. This is how I’ve been able to become a better student, gain hands on experience, and make lasting friends.

Favorite class

Structures and Properties of Materials has been my favorite class, since it is my first real introduction to my major and what I can expect in future classes.

Career goals

After college, I hope to enter the biomedical or semiconductor industry and pursue my masters simultaneously.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Getting dinner or ice cream with friends is my favorite way of spending a free night!
