Elsa, UGA Environmental Resource Science Student

Elsa S
Elsa SNew

Hello! My name is Elsa, and I am a first-year Environmental Resource Science major at the University of Georgia as well as an Honors student. My major is within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), and I'm very involved in sustainability around campus. I play the viola in UGA's Philharmonia Orchestra, I love to learn new languages (right now, I'm pretty fluent in English, German, and French, and I speak a little Italian, Portuguese, Hebrew, and Finnish), and I do aerial silks at a studio downtown. Since coming to UGA, I've become very involved in the ballroom dance scene here, and I'd love to waltz you around campus!

Describe your college experience

My college transition was much smoother than I expected, and since I began living in Athens, my life has been absolutely swell. I love it here; I've made many good friends, my professors have all been wonderful, the social and cultural life around me is rich and bright, and I am altogether very happy!

Tip for future students

Keep a list of people you meet and where you know them. It really helps to remember names! It's also invaluable to regularly use an agenda (not to buy one at the beginning of the year and then forget about it)! I like to color-code my assignments for different classes or based on due-dates, so I know my priorities by looking at the list.

Favorite class

My favorite class is the Intro to GIS class I am currently taking. It's a nice small size (~20 students), the professor (Dr. Anderson) is extremely helpful and receptive, and it's one of the first classes I've taken here which makes me feel like I am having fun AND learning information I can see myself directly using in my career.

Career goals

I don't know yet exactly what I want to do, but I know I want to help the earth while doing it. I want to be a part of the environmental management and protection sector/movement around the world.

Ideal way to spend a free night

A couple of times, my friends and I have hosted a Just Dance party in our dorm common room! Getting the endorphins flowing to your favorite songs is an almost magical way to destress and bond further with new college buddies.
