Hey! I'm Maya, a current graduate student at UMD. I'm pursuing a Master's in Public Health and a Master's in Community Planning. I also completed my undergraduate degree here in biology. I live in Silver Spring, MD, and have a lot of experience at this school. I've been an undergrad student and a grad student, I've lived on and off campus, and I am now a full-on commuter. I can be a great resource for you and answer a lot of the questions you might have.

Describe your college experience

I loved college pretty quickly when I first started. It took some time to adjust to the dorm life and make friends, but once I did, I was so happy. Socially, I have no regrets and am still friends with most of the first people I hung out with-- I'm going to one of their weddings this August! What I learned the hard way was how to study. I was always a good student without having to try too hard in high school, so I did somewhat poorly my first semester. I managed to focus and study efficiently my second semester. I am now a graduate student. I liked UMD enough to stay around for graduate school, and now I have the experience of a commuter, too. I feel that UMD has always been and continues to be a great fit.

Tip for future students

I made my friends by playing basketball outside of the dining hall. You have to put yourself out there in the settings that you thrive in. Put yourself in situations where you can meet like-minded people who enjoy the same things as you.

Favorite class

Introduction to African American Studies. This exposed me to a lot, and helped me decide what to pursue in graduate school. General education classes are important.

Career goals

I hope to use my degrees to help marginalized communities have better health outcomes. I will likely try and contribute towards evidence-based policies in public health.

Ideal way to spend a free night

I love going out to dinner in a fun area. That way, we can walk around afterwards and get dessert. I don't like being up crazy late, so plans like these let me get home at a good hour.
