Creative and fun English major who loves a good walk and talk!

Hi everyone!! My name is Julia and I am a 4th year English major from a small little town in Los Angeles called Montebello. I chose UCSB for it's welcoming and tight knit community. I came to UCSB knowing absolutely no one, and being an only child, but I was able to thrive and learn how to create the best environment for myself. I absolutely love helping others so I have dabbled in jobs such as being an Orientation Leader for UCSB for 2 years and working at the Front Desk of the Student Resource Building for 3. When I am not at the front desk or writing an essay, I am likely exploring Goleta, catching a snack from The Arbor, or lounging on one of the couches in The University Center. I am so excited to get to share my personal and realistic experience of my time here at UCSB so far and to introduce one of my favorite places to all of you.

Describe your college experience

My transition to college was rocky as I came from a private school with a graduating class of 97 to a now much bigger campus with more students than I can count. I was lucky to have had so many resources that helped me in terms of time management, academic schedules, mental health, job interviews, and so much more. I have been able to grow not only as a person but as a student and have learned so much about myself. Even with difficult obstacles that I have faced such as difficult classes, housing, and the distance from my hometown, I have always felt a place at UCSB and so supported with so many lovely mentors who give their all into ensuring comfortability and proper care as a student.

Tip for future students

A tip I would share for future students is to use your resources! There are so many resources for even the situations you may not think are a big deal. These mentors are here to help you because they want to help you, and it's important to recognize and use all of the support while you have it. It can be scary at first, but opening up to the opportunity will only help you succeed further and further!

Favorite class

My favorite class is ENGLISH 10 which is a lowerdivision course, the course consisted of learning about early literature and the development of the study into the 21st century. My professor was by far one of the most understanding professors, he ensured that the entire class understood the work confidently and would work one on one with anyone who felt they needed additional support. Having such a caring professor made my experience so enjoyable and made it very easy to learn and to continue learning.

Career goals

I have career goals of going into broadcast journalism and becoming a news anchor. I also plan to take real estate classes and cosmetology classes to start my own business.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Ideally with a free night I have already done all of my assignments. If I am in a social mood I may call some friends over to my apartment to watch a movie, go walking around Isla Vista, or even a quick night walk on the beach. On nights where my social battery is low, I always enjoy a fascinating book with a cozy blanket on my couch.

Favorite spot on campus

My favorite place on campus is the University Center, specifically the main quad with all of the comfortable couches.
